Le Lion et l'Âne chassant

Un Lion et un Âne convinrent de chasser ensemble. Dans leur recherche de gibier, les chasseurs virent un groupe de chèvres sauvages s’enfuir dans une grotte et élaborèrent un plan pour les capturer.

A Lion and an Ass agreed to go hunting together. In their search for game the hunters saw a number of Wild Goats run into a cave, and laid plans to catch them.

L’Âne devait entrer dans la grotte et faire sortir les chèvres, tandis que le Lion se tiendrait à l’entrée pour les abattre.

The Ass was to go into the cave and drive the Goats out, while the Lion would stand at the entrance to strike them down.

Le plan fonctionna à merveille. L’Âne fit un vacarme si effrayant dans la grotte, ruant et braillant de toutes ses forces, que les chèvres sortirent en courant, prises de panique, pour finir victimes du Lion.

The plan worked beautifully. The Ass made such a frightful din in the cave, kicking and braying with all his might, that the Goats came running out in a panic of fear, only to fall victim to the Lion.

L’Âne sortit fièrement de la grotte.

The Ass came proudly out of the cave.

“As-tu vu comment je les ai fait fuir ?” dit-il.

“Did you see how I made them run?” he said.

“Oui, en effet”, répondit le Lion, “et si je ne t’avais pas connu, toi et ton espèce, j’aurais certainement pris la fuite moi aussi.”

“Yes, indeed,” answered the Lion, “and if I had not known you and your kind I should certainly have run, too.”

Le vantard bruyant n’impressionne ni n’effraie ceux qui le connaissent.

The loud-mouthed boaster does not impress nor frighten those who know him.
