Der alte Großvater und der Enkel

Es war einmal ein sehr alter Mann, dessen Augen trüb geworden waren, dessen Ohren schwer hörten, dessen Knie zitterten, und wenn er bei Tisch saß, konnte er den Löffel kaum halten und verschüttete die Brühe auf dem Tischtuch oder ließ sie aus dem Mund laufen.

There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth.

Sein Sohn und dessen Frau ekelten sich davor, also musste der alte Großvater schließlich in der Ecke hinter dem Ofen sitzen, und sie gaben ihm sein Essen in einer irdenen Schüssel, und nicht einmal genug davon.

His son and his son’s wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather at last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it.

Und er pflegte mit tränenden Augen zum Tisch hinüberzuschauen. Einmal konnten seine zitternden Hände die Schüssel nicht halten, und sie fiel zu Boden und zerbrach. Die junge Frau schimpfte mit ihm, aber er sagte nichts und seufzte nur.

And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of tears. Once, too, his trembling hands could not hold the bowl, and it fell to the ground and broke. The young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed.

Da brachten sie ihm für ein paar Pfennige eine hölzerne Schüssel, aus der er essen musste.

Then they brought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat.

Sie saßen einmal so da, als der kleine Enkel von vier Jahren anfing, ein paar Holzstücke auf dem Boden zusammenzusuchen. „Was machst du da?“, fragte der Vater.

They were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gather together some bits of wood upon the ground. ‘What are you doing there?’ asked the father.

„Ich mache ein kleines Trog“, antwortete das Kind, „daraus sollen Vater und Mutter essen, wenn ich groß bin.“

‘I am making a little trough,’ answered the child, ‘for father and mother to eat out of when I am big.’

Der Mann und seine Frau sahen sich eine Weile an und fingen dann an zu weinen. Da nahmen sie den alten Großvater mit an den Tisch und ließen ihn fortan immer mit ihnen essen, und sagten auch nichts mehr, wenn er ein wenig etwas verschüttete.

The man and his wife looked at each other for a while, and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything.
