Il vecchio e il suo nipotino

C’era una volta un uomo molto vecchio, i cui occhi si erano fatti spenti, le orecchie sorde, le ginocchia tremavano e, quando sedeva a tavola, riusciva a malapena a tenere il cucchiaio, rovesciando il brodo sulla tovaglia o lasciandolo colare dalla bocca.

There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth.

Suo figlio e la moglie di suo figlio ne erano disgustati, così il vecchio nonno dovette infine sedersi in un angolo dietro la stufa, e gli davano da mangiare in una ciotola di terracotta, e nemmeno a sufficienza.

His son and his son’s wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather at last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it.

E lui guardava verso la tavola con gli occhi pieni di lacrime. Una volta, le sue mani tremanti non riuscirono a reggere la ciotola, che cadde a terra e si ruppe. La giovane moglie lo sgridò, ma lui non disse nulla e sospirò soltanto.

And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of tears. Once, too, his trembling hands could not hold the bowl, and it fell to the ground and broke. The young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed.

Allora gli comprarono una ciotola di legno da pochi soldi, dalla quale dovette mangiare.

Then they brought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat.

Una volta erano seduti così quando il nipotino di quattro anni iniziò a raccogliere dei pezzetti di legno da terra. “Cosa stai facendo lì?” chiese il padre.

They were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gather together some bits of wood upon the ground. ‘What are you doing there?’ asked the father.

“Sto costruendo una piccola trogolo”, rispose il bambino, “perché papà e mamma ci mangino quando sarò grande.”

‘I am making a little trough,’ answered the child, ‘for father and mother to eat out of when I am big.’

L’uomo e sua moglie si guardarono per un momento e subito iniziarono a piangere. Poi portarono il vecchio nonno a tavola e d’ora in poi lo lasciarono sempre mangiare con loro, e non dissero nulla nemmeno se rovesciava un po’ di cibo.

The man and his wife looked at each other for a while, and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything.
