El anciano y su nieto

Había una vez un hombre muy anciano, cuyos ojos se habían vuelto opacos, sus oídos apenas oían, sus rodillas temblaban y, cuando se sentaba a la mesa, apenas podía sostener la cuchara, derramando el caldo sobre el mantel o dejando que se le escapara de la boca.

There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth.

A su hijo y a la esposa de este les daba asco, así que al final el viejo abuelo tuvo que sentarse en un rincón detrás de la estufa, y le daban la comida en un cuenco de barro, y ni siquiera la cantidad suficiente.

His son and his son’s wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather at last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it.

Y él solía mirar hacia la mesa con los ojos llenos de lágrimas. Una vez, además, sus manos temblorosas no pudieron sostener el cuenco, y este cayó al suelo y se rompió. La joven esposa lo regañó, pero él no dijo nada y solo suspiró.

And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of tears. Once, too, his trembling hands could not hold the bowl, and it fell to the ground and broke. The young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed.

Entonces le compraron un cuenco de madera por unos pocos céntimos, del cual tuvo que comer.

Then they brought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat.

Una vez estaban sentados así cuando el pequeño nieto de cuatro años comenzó a recoger algunos trozos de madera del suelo. «¿Qué haces ahí?», preguntó el padre.

They were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gather together some bits of wood upon the ground. ‘What are you doing there?’ asked the father.

«Estoy haciendo un pequeño comedero», respondió el niño, «para que papá y mamá coman en él cuando yo sea grande».

‘I am making a little trough,’ answered the child, ‘for father and mother to eat out of when I am big.’

El hombre y su esposa se miraron durante un rato y, al poco tiempo, comenzaron a llorar. Entonces llevaron al viejo abuelo a la mesa y, de ahí en adelante, siempre le permitieron comer con ellos, y tampoco dijeron nada si derramaba un poco de algo.

The man and his wife looked at each other for a while, and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything.
