Le Vieux Grand-père et son petit-fils

Il était une fois un très vieil homme dont les yeux s’étaient obscurcis, les oreilles étaient devenues dures, les genoux tremblaient, et lorsqu’il s’asseyait à table, il pouvait à peine tenir sa cuillère et renversait le bouillon sur la nappe ou le laissait couler de sa bouche.

There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth.

Son fils et sa belle-fille en étaient dégoûtés, si bien que le vieux grand-père finit par devoir s’asseoir dans un coin derrière le poêle, et ils lui donnaient sa nourriture dans un bol en terre cuite, et même pas en quantité suffisante.

His son and his son’s wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather at last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it.

Et il regardait souvent vers la table, les yeux pleins de larmes. Une fois, ses mains tremblantes ne purent tenir le bol, qui tomba par terre et se brisa. La jeune femme le gronda, mais il ne dit rien et se contenta de soupirer.

And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of tears. Once, too, his trembling hands could not hold the bowl, and it fell to the ground and broke. The young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed.

Alors ils lui apportèrent un bol en bois à quelques sous, dans lequel il dut manger.

Then they brought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat.

Ils étaient assis ainsi une fois, quand le petit-fils de quatre ans commença à ramasser des morceaux de bois sur le sol. « Que fais-tu là ? » demanda le père.

They were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gather together some bits of wood upon the ground. ‘What are you doing there?’ asked the father.

« Je fabrique une petite auge, répondit l’enfant, pour que papa et maman mangent dedans quand je serai grand. »

‘I am making a little trough,’ answered the child, ‘for father and mother to eat out of when I am big.’

L’homme et sa femme se regardèrent un moment, puis se mirent à pleurer. Ils firent alors asseoir le vieux grand-père à table et, désormais, le laissèrent toujours manger avec eux, sans rien dire non plus s’il renversait un peu de nourriture.

The man and his wife looked at each other for a while, and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything.
