La vecchia e il suo maialino

Una vecchia stava spazzando casa sua, quando trovò una monetina storta. “Cosa”, disse, “ne farò di questa monetina? Andrò al mercato e comprerò un maialino.”

An old woman was sweeping her house, and she found a little crooked sixpence. “What,” said she, “shall I do with this little sixpence? I will go to market, and buy a little pig.”

Mentre tornava a casa, arrivò a un passaggio: ma il maialino non voleva oltrepassarlo.

As she was coming home, she came to a stile: but the piggy wouldn’t go over the stile.

Andò un po’ più avanti e incontrò un cane. Allora disse al cane: “Cane! Mordi il maiale; il maialino non vuole oltrepassare il passaggio; e io non riuscirò a tornare a casa stasera.” Ma il cane non volle.

She went a little further, and she met a dog. So she said to the dog: “Dog! bite pig; piggy won’t go over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the dog wouldn’t.

Andò un po’ più avanti e incontrò un bastone. Allora disse: “Bastone! Bastone! Picchia il cane! Il cane non vuole mordere il maiale; il maialino non vuole oltrepassare il passaggio; e io non riuscirò a tornare a casa stasera.” Ma il bastone non volle.

She went a little further, and she met a stick. So she said: “Stick! stick! beat dog! dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the stick wouldn’t.

Andò un po’ più avanti e incontrò un fuoco. Allora disse: “Fuoco! Fuoco! Brucia il bastone; il bastone non vuole picchiare il cane; il cane non vuole mordere il maiale; il maialino non vuole oltrepassare il passaggio; e io non riuscirò a tornare a casa stasera.” Ma il fuoco non volle.

She went a little further, and she met a fire. So she said: “Fire! fire! burn stick; stick won’t beat dog; dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the fire wouldn’t.

Andò un po’ più avanti e incontrò dell’acqua. Allora disse: “Acqua, acqua! She went a little further, and she met some water. So she said: “Water, water! quench fire; fire won’t burn stick; stick won’t beat dog; dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the water wouldn’t.

Andò un po’ più avanti e incontrò un bue. Allora disse: “Bue! Bue! Bevi l’acqua; l’acqua non vuole spegnere il fuoco; il fuoco non vuole bruciare il bastone; il bastone non vuole picchiare il cane; il cane non vuole mordere il maiale; il maialino non vuole oltrepassare il passaggio; e io non riuscirò a tornare a casa stasera.”

She went a little further, and she met an ox. So she said: “Ox! ox! drink water; water won’t quench fire; fire won’t burn stick; stick won’t beat dog; dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.”

Ma il bue non volle.

But the ox wouldn’t.

She went a little further, and she met a butcher. So she said: “Butcher! butcher!

ammazza il bue; il bue non vuole bere l’acqua; l’acqua non vuole spegnere il fuoco; il fuoco non vuole bruciare il bastone; il bastone non vuole picchiare il cane; il cane non vuole mordere il maiale; il maialino non vuole oltrepassare il passaggio; e io non riuscirò a tornare a casa stasera.” Ma il macellaio non volle.
