Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse

Es war einmal ein Prinz, der wollte eine Prinzessin heiraten; aber es sollte eine wirkliche Prinzessin sein. Er reiste in der ganzen Welt herum, um eine solche zu finden, aber überall war etwas im Wege.

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted.

Prinzessinnen gab es genug, aber es war schwer herauszufinden, ob es wirkliche Prinzessinnen waren. Immer gab es etwas, das nicht ganz in Ordnung war.

There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be.

Da kam er wieder nach Hause und war ganz traurig, denn er hätte so gerne eine wirkliche Prinzessin gehabt.

So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.

Eines Abends zog ein schreckliches Unwetter auf; es blitzte und donnerte, und der Regen strömte herab. Plötzlich klopfte es an das Stadttor, und der alte König ging hin, um zu öffnen.

One evening a terrible storm came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.

Es war eine Prinzessin, die draußen vor dem Tor stand. Aber du meine Güte, wie sah sie durch den Regen und den Wind aus! Das Wasser lief ihr von den Haaren und aus den Kleidern; es lief in die Spitzen der Schuhe hinein und an den Fersen wieder heraus.

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels.

Und doch sagte sie, sie sei eine wirkliche Prinzessin.

And yet she said that she was a real princess.

“Nun, das werden wir bald herausfinden”, dachte die alte Königin.

“Well, we’ll soon find that out,” thought the old queen.

Sie sagte aber nichts, ging in das Schlafzimmer, nahm alle Betten ab und legte eine Erbse auf den Boden des Bettgestells; dann nahm sie zwanzig Matratzen und legte sie auf die Erbse, und dann zwanzig Eiderdaunendecken oben auf die Matratzen.

But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

Darauf musste die Prinzessin die ganze Nacht liegen. Am Morgen wurde sie gefragt, wie sie geschlafen habe.

On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

“Oh, ganz entsetzlich!”, sagte sie. “Ich habe die ganze Nacht kaum ein Auge zugetan. Gott weiß, was in dem Bett war, aber ich lag auf etwas Hartem, sodass ich am ganzen Körper ganz schwarz und blau bin. Es ist schrecklich!”

“Oh, very badly!” said she. “I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It’s horrible!”

Da wussten sie, dass sie eine wirkliche Prinzessin war, weil sie die Erbse durch die zwanzig Matratzen und die zwanzig Eiderdaunendecken hindurch gespürt hatte.

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

Niemand außer einer wirklichen Prinzessin konnte so empfindlich sein.

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

Da nahm der Prinz sie zur Frau, denn nun wusste er, dass er eine wirkliche Prinzessin hatte; und die Erbse kam in das Museum, wo sie noch immer zu sehen ist, wenn sie niemand gestohlen hat.

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.
