La principessa sul pisello

C’era una volta un principe che voleva sposare una principessa; ma doveva essere una vera principessa. Viaggiò in tutto il mondo per trovarne una, ma da nessuna parte riusciva a ottenere ciò che voleva.

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted.

Di principesse ce n’erano a sufficienza, ma era difficile scoprire se fossero vere. C’era sempre qualcosa in loro che non andava come avrebbe dovuto.

There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be.

Così tornò a casa ed era triste, perché avrebbe voluto tanto avere una vera principessa.

So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.

Una sera scoppiò una terribile tempesta; ci furono tuoni e fulmini, e la pioggia scrosciò a torrenti. Improvvisamente si sentì bussare alla porta della città, e il vecchio re andò ad aprire.

One evening a terrible storm came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.

Era una principessa quella che stava là fuori davanti al cancello. Ma, cielo! Che aspetto le avevano dato la pioggia e il vento. L’acqua le colava dai capelli e dai vestiti; scorreva giù fino alle punte delle scarpe e usciva dai tacchi.

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels.

Eppure diceva di essere una vera principessa.

And yet she said that she was a real princess.

“Beh, lo scopriremo presto”, pensò la vecchia regina.

“Well, we’ll soon find that out,” thought the old queen.

Ma non disse nulla, andò in camera da letto, tolse tutta la biancheria dal letto e mise un pisello sul fondo; poi prese venti materassi e li dispose sopra il pisello, e poi venti piumini sopra i materassi.

But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

Su questo la principessa dovette dormire tutta la notte. Al mattino le fu chiesto come avesse dormito.

On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

“Oh, malissimo!” disse lei. “Non ho quasi chiuso occhio tutta la notte. Dio solo sa cosa ci fosse nel letto, ma ero sdraiata su qualcosa di duro, tanto che sono tutta nera e blu su tutto il corpo. È orribile!”

“Oh, very badly!” said she. “I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It’s horrible!”

Ora sapevano che era una vera principessa perché aveva sentito il pisello attraverso i venti materassi e i venti piumini.

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

Nessuno tranne una vera principessa poteva essere così sensibile.

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

Così il principe la prese in moglie, perché ora sapeva di avere una vera principessa; e il pisello fu messo nel museo, dove può ancora essere visto, se nessuno l’ha rubato.

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.
