La princesa y el guisante

Había una vez un príncipe que quería casarse con una princesa; pero tenía que ser una princesa de verdad. Viajó por todo el mundo para encontrar una, pero en ninguna parte pudo conseguir lo que quería.

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted.

Había suficientes princesas, pero era difícil saber si eran reales. Siempre había algo en ellas que no estaba como debía ser.

There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be.

Así que regresó a casa y estaba triste, porque le habría gustado mucho tener una princesa de verdad.

So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.

Una noche se desató una tormenta terrible; hubo truenos y relámpagos, y la lluvia caía a cántaros. De repente, se escuchó un golpe en la puerta de la ciudad y el viejo rey fue a abrirla.

One evening a terrible storm came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.

Era una princesa la que estaba allí afuera, frente a la puerta. Pero, ¡por Dios!, qué aspecto le habían dado la lluvia y el viento. El agua corría por su cabello y su ropa; se filtraba hasta la punta de sus zapatos y salía por los talones.

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels.

Y, sin embargo, ella decía que era una princesa de verdad.

And yet she said that she was a real princess.

“Bueno, pronto lo averiguaremos”, pensó la vieja reina.

“Well, we’ll soon find that out,” thought the old queen.

Pero no dijo nada, entró en el dormitorio, quitó toda la ropa de cama del armazón y puso un guisante en el fondo; luego tomó veinte colchones y los colocó sobre el guisante, y después veinte edredones de plumas sobre los colchones.

But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

En ellos tuvo que dormir la princesa toda la noche. Por la mañana, le preguntaron cómo había dormido.

On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

“¡Oh, muy mal!”, dijo ella. “Apenas he cerrado los ojos en toda la noche. Dios sabe lo que había en la cama, pero estaba acostada sobre algo duro, así que tengo el cuerpo lleno de moratones. ¡Es horrible!”

“Oh, very badly!” said she. “I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It’s horrible!”

Entonces supieron que era una princesa de verdad, porque había sentido el guisante a través de los veinte colchones y los veinte edredones de plumas.

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

Nadie más que una princesa de verdad podría ser tan sensible.

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

Así que el príncipe la tomó por esposa, pues ahora sabía que tenía una princesa de verdad; y el guisante fue puesto en el museo, donde todavía se puede ver, si es que nadie lo ha robado.

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.
