Sachant que Mme Mallard était affligée d’une maladie cardiaque, on prit grand soin de lui annoncer la nouvelle de la mort de son mari aussi doucement que possible.
Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death.
C’est sa sœur Josephine qui le lui apprit, par phrases hachées ; des allusions voilées qui révélaient en dissimulant à moitié. L’ami de son mari, Richards, était là aussi, près d’elle.
It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. Her husband’s friend Richards was there, too, near her.
C’est lui qui se trouvait au bureau du journal lorsque la nouvelle de la catastrophe ferroviaire fut reçue, le nom de Brently Mallard figurant en tête de la liste des « tués ».
It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard’s name leading the list of “killed.”
Il avait seulement pris le temps de s’assurer de la véracité de l’information par un second télégramme, et s’était hâté de devancer tout ami moins prudent, moins tendre, pour porter le triste message.
He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message.
Elle n’entendit pas l’histoire comme beaucoup de femmes ont entendu la même, avec une incapacité paralysée à en accepter la signification. Elle pleura aussitôt, avec un abandon soudain et sauvage, dans les bras de sa sœur.
She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms.
Quand la tempête de chagrin se fut apaisée, elle s’en alla seule dans sa chambre. Elle ne voulut laisser personne la suivre.
When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.
Là, face à la fenêtre ouverte, se trouvait un fauteuil confortable et spacieux. Elle s’y enfonça, accablée par un épuisement physique qui hantait son corps et semblait atteindre son âme.
There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.
Elle pouvait voir, sur la place ouverte devant sa maison, la cime des arbres qui frémissaient de la nouvelle vie printanière. Le souffle délicieux de la pluie était dans l’air. Dans la rue en contrebas, un marchand ambulant criait sa marchandise.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares.
Les notes d’une chanson lointaine que quelqu’un chantait lui parvenaient faiblement, et d’innombrables moineaux gazouillaient sous les avant-toits.
The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves.
Des taches de ciel bleu apparaissaient ici et là à travers les nuages qui s’étaient rencontrés et entassés les uns sur les autres à l’ouest, face à sa fenêtre.
There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window.
Elle était assise, la tête renversée sur le coussin du fauteuil, tout à fait immobile, sauf lorsqu’un sanglot lui montait à la gorge et la secouait, comme un enfant qui a pleuré jusqu’à s’endormir continue de sangloter dans ses rêves.
She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams.
Elle était jeune, avec un visage calme et clair, dont les traits témoignaient d’une répression et même d’une certaine force. Mais maintenant, il y avait un regard terne dans ses yeux, fixés au loin sur l’une de ces taches de ciel bleu.
She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky.
Ce n’était pas un regard de réflexion, mais cela indiquait plutôt une suspension de la pensée intelligente.
It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.
Quelque chose venait vers elle et elle l’attendait, avec crainte. Qu’était-ce ? Elle ne savait pas ; c’était trop subtil et insaisissable pour être nommé.
There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name.
