La historia de los tres osos

Érase una vez tres osos que vivían juntos en una casa propia, en medio de un bosque. Uno de ellos era un osito pequeño, diminuto; otro era un oso mediano, y el tercero era un oso grande y enorme.

Once upon a time there were Three Bears, who lived together in a house of their own, in a wood. One of them was a Little, Small Wee Bear; and one was a Middle-sized Bear, and the other was a Great, Huge Bear.

Cada uno tenía su propio tazón para la avena: un tazón pequeño para el osito pequeño y diminuto; un tazón mediano para el oso mediano, y un tazón grande para el oso grande y enorme.

They had each a pot for their porridge, a little pot for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized pot for the Middle Bear, and a great pot for the Great, Huge Bear.

Y cada uno tenía su propia silla para sentarse: una silla pequeña para el osito pequeño y diminuto; una silla mediana para el oso mediano, y una silla grande para el oso grande y enorme.

And they had each a chair to sit in; a little chair for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized chair for the Middle Bear; and a great chair for the Great, Huge Bear.

Y cada uno tenía su propia cama para dormir: una cama pequeña para el osito pequeño y diminuto; una cama mediana para el oso mediano, y una cama grande para el oso grande y enorme.

And they had each a bed to sleep in; a little bed for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized bed for the Middle Bear; and a great bed for the Great, Huge Bear.

Un día, después de preparar la avena para el desayuno y servirla en sus tazones, salieron a pasear por el bosque mientras la avena se enfriaba, para no quemarse la boca al empezar a comerla demasiado pronto.

One day, after they had made the porridge for their breakfast, and poured it into their porridge-pots, they walked out into the wood while the porridge was cooling, that they might not burn their mouths, by beginning too soon to eat it.

Y mientras paseaban, una viejecita llegó a la casa. No debía de ser una anciana buena y honrada, pues primero miró por la ventana y luego se asomó por la cerradura; y al no ver a nadie en la casa, levantó el pestillo.

And while they were walking, a little old Woman came to the house. She could not have been a good, honest old Woman; for first she looked in at the window, and then she peeped in at the keyhole; and seeing nobody in the house, she lifted the latch.

La puerta no estaba cerrada con llave, porque los osos eran buenos osos, que no hacían daño a nadie y nunca sospechaban que alguien pudiera hacérselo a ellos.

The door was not fastened, because the Bears were good Bears, who did nobody any harm, and never suspected that anybody would harm them.

Así que la viejecita abrió la puerta y entró; y se alegró mucho al ver la avena sobre la mesa.

So the little old Woman opened the door, and went in; and well pleased she was when she saw the porridge on the table.

Si hubiera sido una buena viejecita, habría esperado a que los osos volvieran a casa y entonces, tal vez, la habrían invitado a desayunar; porque eran buenos osos, un poco rudos, como suelen ser los osos, pero a pesar de eso, muy bondadosos y hospitalarios.

If she had been a good little old Woman, she would have waited till the Bears came home, and then, perhaps, they would have asked her to breakfast; for they were good Bears--a little rough or so, as the manner of Bears is, but for all that very good-natured and hospitable.

Pero era una anciana descarada y malvada, y se puso a servirse ella misma.

But she was an impudent, bad old Woman, and set about helping herself.

Primero probó la avena del oso grande y enorme, pero estaba demasiado caliente para ella, y dijo una palabrota al respecto. Luego probó la avena del oso mediano, pero estaba demasiado fría para ella, y también dijo una palabrota sobre eso.

So first she tasted the porridge of the Great, Huge Bear, and that was too hot for her; and she said a bad word about that. And then she tasted the porridge of the Middle Bear, and that was too cold for her; and she said a bad word about that too.

Después fue a por la avena del osito pequeño y diminuto y la probó; no estaba ni demasiado caliente ni demasiado fría, sino en su punto; le gustó tanto que se la comió toda, pero la traviesa anciana dijo una palabrota sobre el pequeño tazón porque no contenía suficiente para ella.

And then she went to the porridge of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, and tasted that; and that was neither too hot, nor too cold, but just right; and she liked it so well, that she ate it all up: but the naughty old Woman said a bad word about the little porridge-pot, because it did not hold enough for her.
