L'Histoire des trois ours

Il était une fois trois ours qui vivaient ensemble dans leur propre maison, au milieu d’un bois. L’un d’eux était un tout petit ours ; un autre était un ours de taille moyenne, et le troisième était un grand et énorme ours.

Once upon a time there were Three Bears, who lived together in a house of their own, in a wood. One of them was a Little, Small Wee Bear; and one was a Middle-sized Bear, and the other was a Great, Huge Bear.

Ils avaient chacun un pot pour leur porridge : un petit pot pour le tout petit ours, un pot de taille moyenne pour l’ours moyen, et un grand pot pour le grand et énorme ours.

They had each a pot for their porridge, a little pot for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized pot for the Middle Bear, and a great pot for the Great, Huge Bear.

Ils avaient chacun une chaise pour s’asseoir : une petite chaise pour le tout petit ours, une chaise de taille moyenne pour l’ours moyen, et une grande chaise pour le grand et énorme ours.

And they had each a chair to sit in; a little chair for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized chair for the Middle Bear; and a great chair for the Great, Huge Bear.

Et ils avaient chacun un lit pour dormir : un petit lit pour le tout petit ours, un lit de taille moyenne pour l’ours moyen, et un grand lit pour le grand et énorme ours.

And they had each a bed to sleep in; a little bed for the Little, Small, Wee Bear; and a middle-sized bed for the Middle Bear; and a great bed for the Great, Huge Bear.

Un jour, après avoir préparé le porridge pour leur petit-déjeuner et l’avoir versé dans leurs bols, ils sortirent se promener dans le bois pendant que le porridge refroidissait, afin de ne pas se brûler la bouche en commençant à manger trop tôt.

One day, after they had made the porridge for their breakfast, and poured it into their porridge-pots, they walked out into the wood while the porridge was cooling, that they might not burn their mouths, by beginning too soon to eat it.

Pendant qu’ils se promenaient, une petite vieille femme arriva à la maison. Ce ne devait pas être une brave et honnête vieille femme, car elle regarda d’abord par la fenêtre, puis elle lorgna par le trou de la serrure ; et ne voyant personne dans la maison, elle souleva le loquet.

And while they were walking, a little old Woman came to the house. She could not have been a good, honest old Woman; for first she looked in at the window, and then she peeped in at the keyhole; and seeing nobody in the house, she lifted the latch.

La porte n’était pas fermée à clé, car les ours étaient de bons ours qui ne faisaient de mal à personne et ne soupçonnaient jamais que quelqu’un pût leur en faire.

The door was not fastened, because the Bears were good Bears, who did nobody any harm, and never suspected that anybody would harm them.

La petite vieille femme ouvrit donc la porte et entra ; et elle fut bien contente de voir le porridge sur la table.

So the little old Woman opened the door, and went in; and well pleased she was when she saw the porridge on the table.

Si elle avait été une bonne petite vieille femme, elle aurait attendu le retour des ours, et alors, peut-être, l’auraient-ils invitée à prendre le petit-déjeuner ; car c’étaient de bons ours, un peu rustres, comme le sont les ours, mais malgré cela très bons et hospitaliers.

If she had been a good little old Woman, she would have waited till the Bears came home, and then, perhaps, they would have asked her to breakfast; for they were good Bears--a little rough or so, as the manner of Bears is, but for all that very good-natured and hospitable.

Mais c’était une vieille femme impudente et méchante, et elle se mit à se servir elle-même.

But she was an impudent, bad old Woman, and set about helping herself.

Elle goûta d’abord le porridge du grand et énorme ours, mais il était trop chaud pour elle ; et elle dit un gros mot à ce sujet. Puis elle goûta le porridge de l’ours moyen, mais il était trop froid pour elle ; et elle dit aussi un gros mot à ce sujet.

So first she tasted the porridge of the Great, Huge Bear, and that was too hot for her; and she said a bad word about that. And then she tasted the porridge of the Middle Bear, and that was too cold for her; and she said a bad word about that too.

Elle alla ensuite au porridge du tout petit ours et le goûta ; il n’était ni trop chaud, ni trop froid, mais juste à point ; et elle l’aima tant qu’elle le mangea tout entier : mais la méchante vieille femme dit un gros mot au sujet du petit pot, parce qu’il n’en contenait pas assez pour elle.

And then she went to the porridge of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, and tasted that; and that was neither too hot, nor too cold, but just right; and she liked it so well, that she ate it all up: but the naughty old Woman said a bad word about the little porridge-pot, because it did not hold enough for her.
