El cuento de la ardilla Nutkin

Este es un cuento sobre una cola; una cola que pertenecía a una pequeña ardilla roja, y su nombre era Nutkin.

This is a Tale about a tail--a tail that belonged to a little red squirrel, and his name was Nutkin.

Tenía un hermano llamado Twinkleberry y muchos primos: vivían en un bosque al borde de un lago.

He had a brother called Twinkleberry, and a great many cousins: they lived in a wood at the edge of a lake.

En medio del lago hay una isla cubierta de árboles y arbustos de nueces; y entre esos árboles se alza un roble hueco, que es la casa de un búho llamado Viejo Brown.

In the middle of the lake there is an island covered with trees and nut bushes; and amongst those trees stands a hollow oak-tree, which is the house of an owl who is called Old Brown.

Un otoño, cuando las nueces estaban maduras y las hojas de los avellanos eran doradas y verdes, Nutkin, Twinkleberry y todas las demás ardillitas salieron del bosque y bajaron hasta la orilla del lago.

One autumn when the nuts were ripe, and the leaves on the hazel bushes were golden and green--Nutkin and Twinkleberry and all the other little squirrels came out of the wood, and down to the edge of the lake.

Hicieron pequeñas balsas con ramitas y remaron sobre el agua hasta la Isla del Búho para recoger nueces.

They made little rafts out of twigs, and they paddled away over the water to Owl Island to gather nuts.

Cada ardilla tenía un saquito y un remo grande, y desplegaba su cola como si fuera una vela.

Each squirrel had a little sack and a large oar, and spread out his tail for a sail.

También llevaron consigo una ofrenda de tres ratones gordos como regalo para el Viejo Brown, y los dejaron en el umbral de su puerta.

They also took with them an offering of three fat mice as a present for Old Brown, and put them down upon his door-step.

Entonces Twinkleberry y las otras ardillitas hicieron cada una una profunda reverencia y dijeron cortésmente:

Then Twinkleberry and the other little squirrels each made a low bow, and said politely--

“Viejo Sr. Brown, ¿nos concede permiso para recoger nueces en su isla?”

“Old Mr. Brown, will you favour us with permission to gather nuts upon your island?”

Pero Nutkin era excesivamente impertinente en sus modales. Saltaba arriba y abajo como una pequeña cereza roja, cantando:

But Nutkin was excessively impertinent in his manners. He bobbed up and down like a little red cherry, singing--

“¡Adivina, adivinanza, que el tiempo avanza! ¡Un hombrecito con casaca roja! ¡Un bastón en la mano y una piedra en la garganta; si adivinas este acertijo, te daré un cuarto!”

“Riddle me, riddle me, rot-tot-tote! A little wee man, in a red red coat! A staff in his hand, and a stone in his throat; If you’ll tell me this riddle, I’ll give you a groat.”

Ahora bien, este acertijo es tan viejo como las colinas; el Sr. Brown no prestó ninguna atención a Nutkin.

Now this riddle is as old as the hills; Mr. Brown paid no attention whatever to Nutkin.

Cerró los ojos obstinadamente y se fue a dormir.

He shut his eyes obstinately and went to sleep.

Las ardillas llenaron sus saquitos con nueces y navegaron de regreso a casa por la tarde.

The squirrels filled their little sacks with nuts, and sailed away home in the evening.
