La storia di scoiattolo Nutkin

Questa è la storia di una coda, una coda che apparteneva a un piccolo scoiattolo rosso, e il suo nome era Nutkin.

This is a Tale about a tail--a tail that belonged to a little red squirrel, and his name was Nutkin.

Aveva un fratello chiamato Twinkleberry e moltissimi cugini: vivevano in un bosco ai margini di un lago.

He had a brother called Twinkleberry, and a great many cousins: they lived in a wood at the edge of a lake.

Nel mezzo del lago c’è un’isola coperta di alberi e cespugli di noci; e tra quegli alberi sorge una quercia cava, che è la casa di un gufo chiamato Vecchio Brown.

In the middle of the lake there is an island covered with trees and nut bushes; and amongst those trees stands a hollow oak-tree, which is the house of an owl who is called Old Brown.

Un autunno, quando le noci erano mature e le foglie sui cespugli di nocciolo erano dorate e verdi, Nutkin, Twinkleberry e tutti gli altri scoiattoli uscirono dal bosco e scesero fino al bordo del lago.

One autumn when the nuts were ripe, and the leaves on the hazel bushes were golden and green--Nutkin and Twinkleberry and all the other little squirrels came out of the wood, and down to the edge of the lake.

Costruirono piccole zattere con dei rametti e remavano via sull’acqua verso l’Isola dei Gufi per raccogliere noci.

They made little rafts out of twigs, and they paddled away over the water to Owl Island to gather nuts.

Ogni scoiattolo aveva un sacchetto e un grande remo, e spiegava la coda come una vela.

Each squirrel had a little sack and a large oar, and spread out his tail for a sail.

Portarono con sé anche un’offerta di tre topi grassi come regalo per il Vecchio Brown, e li depositarono sulla soglia della sua porta.

They also took with them an offering of three fat mice as a present for Old Brown, and put them down upon his door-step.

Poi Twinkleberry e gli altri piccoli scoiattoli fecero ciascuno un profondo inchino e dissero cortesemente:

Then Twinkleberry and the other little squirrels each made a low bow, and said politely--

“Vecchio signor Brown, ci concedereste il permesso di raccogliere noci sulla vostra isola?”

“Old Mr. Brown, will you favour us with permission to gather nuts upon your island?”

Ma Nutkin era eccessivamente impertinente nei modi. Saltellava su e giù come una piccola ciliegia rossa, cantando:

But Nutkin was excessively impertinent in his manners. He bobbed up and down like a little red cherry, singing--

“Indovina, indovina, rot-tot-tote! Un omino piccino, con un cappotto rosso rosso! Un bastone in mano e un sasso in gola; se mi indovini questo indovinello, ti darò un soldo.”

“Riddle me, riddle me, rot-tot-tote! A little wee man, in a red red coat! A staff in his hand, and a stone in his throat; If you’ll tell me this riddle, I’ll give you a groat.”

Ora, questo indovinello è vecchio quanto le colline; il signor Brown non prestò alcuna attenzione a Nutkin.

Now this riddle is as old as the hills; Mr. Brown paid no attention whatever to Nutkin.

Chiuse gli occhi ostinatamente e si addormentò.

He shut his eyes obstinately and went to sleep.

Gli scoiattoli riempirono i loro sacchetti di noci e salparono verso casa la sera.

The squirrels filled their little sacks with nuts, and sailed away home in the evening.
