El lobo y la grulla

Un lobo había estado dándose un banquete con demasiada glotonería y un hueso se le había quedado atravesado en la garganta. No podía ni tragarlo ni expulsarlo y, por supuesto, no podía comer nada. Naturalmente, aquello era una situación terrible para un lobo glotón.

A Wolf had been feasting too greedily, and a bone had stuck crosswise in his throat. He could get it neither up nor down, and of course he could not eat a thing. Naturally that was an awful state of affairs for a greedy Wolf.

Así que se apresuró a buscar a la grulla. Estaba seguro de que ella, con su cuello y pico largos, podría alcanzar fácilmente el hueso y sacarlo.

So away he hurried to the Crane. He was sure that she, with her long neck and bill, would easily be able to reach the bone and pull it out.

“Te recompensaré muy generosamente”, dijo el lobo, “si sacas ese hueso por mí”.

“I will reward you very handsomely,” said the Wolf, “if you pull that bone out for me.”

La grulla, como puedes imaginar, se sentía muy inquieta ante la idea de meter la cabeza en la garganta de un lobo. Pero era de naturaleza codiciosa, así que hizo lo que el lobo le pidió.

The Crane, as you can imagine, was very uneasy about putting her head in a Wolf’s throat. But she was grasping in nature, so she did what the Wolf asked her to do.

Cuando el lobo sintió que el hueso había desaparecido, comenzó a alejarse.

When the Wolf felt that the bone was gone, he started to walk away.

“¡Pero, ¿qué hay de mi recompensa?!”, gritó la grulla con ansiedad.

“But what about my reward!” called the Crane anxiously.

“¡Qué!”, gruñó el lobo, dándose la vuelta bruscamente. “¿Acaso no la has recibido? ¿No es suficiente con que te haya dejado sacar la cabeza de mi boca sin habértela arrancado de un mordisco?”

“What!” snarled the Wolf, whirling around. “Haven’t you got it? Isn’t it enough that I let you take your head out of my mouth without snapping it off?”

No esperes recompensa por servir a los malvados.
