Le Loup et la Cigogne

Un Loup avait fait un festin trop glouton, et un os s’était mis en travers de sa gorge. Il ne pouvait ni l’avaler ni le recracher, et bien sûr, il ne pouvait rien manger. C’était naturellement une situation terrible pour un Loup si gourmand.

A Wolf had been feasting too greedily, and a bone had stuck crosswise in his throat. He could get it neither up nor down, and of course he could not eat a thing. Naturally that was an awful state of affairs for a greedy Wolf.

Il se précipita donc vers la Grue. Il était certain qu’elle, avec son long cou et son bec, pourrait facilement atteindre l’os et l’extraire.

So away he hurried to the Crane. He was sure that she, with her long neck and bill, would easily be able to reach the bone and pull it out.

« Je te récompenserai très généreusement », dit le Loup, « si tu m’enlèves cet os. »

“I will reward you very handsomely,” said the Wolf, “if you pull that bone out for me.”

La Grue, comme vous pouvez l’imaginer, était très mal à l’aise à l’idée de mettre sa tête dans la gorge d’un Loup. Mais comme elle était de nature cupide, elle fit ce que le Loup lui demandait.

The Crane, as you can imagine, was very uneasy about putting her head in a Wolf’s throat. But she was grasping in nature, so she did what the Wolf asked her to do.

Quand le Loup sentit que l’os avait disparu, il commença à s’éloigner.

When the Wolf felt that the bone was gone, he started to walk away.

« Mais qu’en est-il de ma récompense ! » cria la Grue avec anxiété.

“But what about my reward!” called the Crane anxiously.

« Quoi ! » grogna le Loup en se retournant brusquement. « Ne l’as-tu pas eue ? N’est-ce pas suffisant que je t’aie laissé retirer ta tête de ma gueule sans la refermer sur toi ? »

“What!” snarled the Wolf, whirling around. “Haven’t you got it? Isn’t it enough that I let you take your head out of my mouth without snapping it off?”

N’attendez aucune récompense pour avoir servi les méchants.
