Il lupo e la gru

Un lupo aveva banchettato troppo avidamente e un osso gli si era conficcato di traverso in gola. Non riusciva né a mandarlo giù né a tirarlo fuori e, naturalmente, non poteva mangiare nulla. Ovviamente, quella era una situazione terribile per un lupo ingordo.

A Wolf had been feasting too greedily, and a bone had stuck crosswise in his throat. He could get it neither up nor down, and of course he could not eat a thing. Naturally that was an awful state of affairs for a greedy Wolf.

Così corse dalla gru. Era certo che lei, con il suo collo lungo e il suo becco, sarebbe stata facilmente in grado di raggiungere l’osso e di estrarlo.

So away he hurried to the Crane. He was sure that she, with her long neck and bill, would easily be able to reach the bone and pull it out.

“Ti ricompenserò molto generosamente”, disse il lupo, “se mi togli quell’osso”.

“I will reward you very handsomely,” said the Wolf, “if you pull that bone out for me.”

La gru, come si può immaginare, era molto a disagio all’idea di infilare la testa nella gola di un lupo. Ma era di natura avida, così fece ciò che il lupo le aveva chiesto.

The Crane, as you can imagine, was very uneasy about putting her head in a Wolf’s throat. But she was grasping in nature, so she did what the Wolf asked her to do.

Quando il lupo sentì che l’osso non c’era più, iniziò ad allontanarsi.

When the Wolf felt that the bone was gone, he started to walk away.

“Ma che ne è della mia ricompensa!” esclamò la gru ansiosa.

“But what about my reward!” called the Crane anxiously.

“Cosa!” ringhiò il lupo, voltandosi di scatto. “Non l’hai avuta? Non ti basta che ti abbia lasciato tirare fuori la testa dalla mia bocca senza mozzartela?”

“What!” snarled the Wolf, whirling around. “Haven’t you got it? Isn’t it enough that I let you take your head out of my mouth without snapping it off?”
