Mijn broer Leo is negen. Vorige zomer wilden we heel graag in het bos kamperen, helemaal alleen, als echte avonturiers.

My name is Max and I’m twelve years old. My brother Leo is nine. Last summer we really wanted to camp in the forest, all on our own, like real adventurers.

“In het bos? Alleen? Nee”, zei mama.

“In the forest? On your own? No,” Mum said. “But you can camp in the garden. One night.”

De tuin was niet het bos. Maar een tent is een tent. We zeiden meteen ja.

The garden wasn’t the forest. But a tent is a tent. We said yes straight away.

That week Grandma and Grandpa were staying with us too. Grandpa is big and round and laughs very loudly. His blood sugar is too high, so his doctor has banned him from sweets. Grandma watches him very carefully. All week Grandpa only got apples and carrots. He wasn’t happy.

On Saturday afternoon Leo and I put up the tent. It took two hours, and in the end it was a little crooked. We put two sleeping bags, two pillows and a torch inside.

And then the most important thing: a big bag of sweets. Two bars of chocolate, a bag of crisps and a packet of gummy bears. The tent was small, so we put the bag outside in front of the entrance.

Opa keek toe terwijl we inpakten.

Grandpa watched us packing. He looked at the bag for a long time and sighed deeply.
