Chinese to English

Translate a Chinese book into English, and keep the Chinese

Upload a Chinese novel, web novel or classic and read it with English beside every paragraph: the story in English when you want to move fast, the Chinese one glance away when you want to know what the author actually wrote.

ChineseEnglish

我冒了严寒,回到相隔二千余里,别了二十余年的故乡去。

Braving the bitter cold, I travelled more than two thousand li back to the home I had left over twenty years before.

时候既然是深冬;渐近故乡时,天气又阴晦了,冷风吹进船舱中,呜呜的响,从篷隙向外一望,苍黄的天底下,远近横着几个萧索的荒村,没有一些活气。

It was the depth of winter. As we neared my old home the sky clouded over, a cold wind moaned into the cabin, and through a gap in the awning I saw, under a sallow sky, a few bleak villages scattered far and near, without a sign of life.

故乡 (My Old Home), Lu Xun (1921), with our own English rendering.

How it works

Upload the book, choose English, and look at the free preview of the opening pages, side by side. If it reads well, translate the whole book and read it in the browser, or download it as a PDF, an EPUB, or a Kindle file. More about translating a book.

Where to find Chinese books

Classics such as Lu Xun, the four great novels and much of the Republican era are in the public domain and free to download. Web novels often come as long text files, which can be uploaded as they are. Simplified and traditional characters both work.

Reading Chinese with English beside it

Idioms you can see

Four-character idioms and classical allusions rarely survive into English word for word. With the original beside the translation you can spot where a chengyu was turned into a plain phrase, and look it up if you are learning.

Long books, priced by the page

A web novel can run to thousands of pages. Translation is priced by the page, so start with one volume or the first hundred chapters, see whether it reads well for you, and go on from there.

Names stay findable

However the English renders a name, a place or a sect, the original characters stay right next to it, so you are never lost about who is who.

Questions

Can I translate a Chinese web novel into English?

Yes, from a text file, a DRM-free EPUB or a text-based PDF. Upload it, choose English, and check the free preview first. For a very long novel, upload one volume at a time.

Does it handle traditional Chinese?

Yes, simplified and traditional both work, as source and as the second language.

Is it a literary translation?

No. It is a machine translation meant to be read next to the original, good for following the story and checking a passage. The Chinese stays beside it so you can always see what was written.
