레모네이드

Lemonade

토요일 아침에 부엌에서 레몬 냄새가 난다. 레몬이 사방에 있다. 식탁 위, 의자 위, 바닥에도 있다.

On Saturday morning, the kitchen smells of lemons. There are lemons everywhere: on the table, on the chairs, on the floor.

엘레나: 로사는 사십 년 동안 축제용 레모네이드를 만들었어. 레몬 이백 개, 설탕, 물, 민트 조금. 그리고 비밀 하나.

Elena: Rosa made the lemonade for the festival for forty years. Two hundred lemons. Sugar, water, a little mint. And one secret.

“어떤 비밀이야?”

“What secret?”

엘레나: 내가 말하면 비밀이 아니지.

Elena: If I tell you, it’s not a secret.

엘레나는 레몬을 짜고, 즙이 안경에 튄다. 엘레나가 웃는다. 나도 웃는다. 오랜만에 맞는 좋은 아침이다.

She squeezes a lemon, and the juice jumps onto her glasses. She laughs. I laugh too. It is the first good morning in a long time.

“오늘 저녁에 축제에 와?”

“Will you come to the festival tonight?”

엘레나: 당연하지. 내 마지막 축제야. 누군가는 레모네이드를 팔아야 해. 넌 이탈리아어로 돈을 셀 줄 모르잖아.

Elena: Of course. It’s my last festival. Somebody has to sell the lemonade. You can’t count money in Italian.

“마지막 축제라고?”

“Your last festival?”

엘레나는 대답하지 않는다. 다음 레몬을 자른다. 아까보다 조금 더 힘을 준다.

She doesn’t answer. She cuts the next lemon. A little harder than before.
