토마토 세 개

니마는 여덟 살이다. 니마는 엄마와 아빠와 키수무에서 산다. 키수무는 케냐에 있는 도시이고, 큰 호수 옆에 있다.

Neema is eight years old. She lives with Mum and Dad in Kisumu. Kisumu is a town in Kenya, on a big lake.

니마는 축구를 좋아한다. 매일 방과 후에 니마는 주마와 티토와 길에서 논다. 골대는 돌 두 개이다. 공은 낡은 비닐봉지와 끈으로 만든 공이다. 둥글지 않다. 공은 퍽, 퍽 소리만 낸다.

Neema loves football. Every day after school she plays with Juma and Tito in the street. The goal is two stones. The ball is made of old bags and string. It isn’t round. It only goes pock, pock.

니마는 진짜 공을 원한다. 진짜 공은 돈이 많이 든다. 일 년 전부터 니마는 토요일마다 시장에서 엄마를 돕는다. 돈은 통에 모은다.

Neema wants a real ball. A real ball costs a lot of money. For a year she has been helping Mum at the market every Saturday. Her money goes into a tin.

오늘은 토요일이고 통이 가득 차 있다. 니마는 시장에 가서 공을 산다. 공은 하얗고 빨갛다. 그리고 둥글다. 아주 둥글다! 니마는 아기처럼 공을 안고 집으로 간다.

Today is Saturday, and the tin is full. Neema goes to the market and buys the ball. It is white and red, and it is round. Very round! She carries it home like a baby.

“진짜 공이야!” 주마가 외친다. “차!” 티토가 외친다. 니마는 공을 길에 놓는다. 니마가 달린다. 니마가 찬다. 아주 세게 찬다.

“A real ball!” shouts Juma. “Shoot!” shouts Tito. Neema puts the ball on the street. She runs. She shoots. She shoots very hard.

공이 높이 날아간다. 길을 넘어서 날아간다. 담을 넘어서 날아간다. 그때 아이들은 소리를 듣는다. 철퍽.

The ball flies high. It flies over the street. It flies over the wall. Then they hear it: splat.

담 뒤에는 오티에노 할아버지의 마당이 있다. 오티에노 할아버지는 나이가 많고 지팡이가 있다. 할아버지는 아이들과 말을 안 한다. 모든 아이들은 할아버지를 조금 무서워한다.

Behind the wall is Mr Otieno’s garden. Mr Otieno is old and has a walking stick. He never talks to the children. All the children are a little afraid of him.

담은 안 높다. 아이들은 담 너머를 본다. 오티에노 할아버지가 토마토 옆에 서 있다. 큰 토마토 세 개가 으깨져 있다. 할아버지는 공을 들고 집으로 들어간다. 문이 닫힌다.

The wall isn’t high. The children look over the wall. Mr Otieno is standing by his tomatoes. Three big tomatoes are squashed. He takes the ball and goes into the house. The door closes.

니마는 길에 앉는다. 공을 산 지 한 시간뿐인데 이제 공이 없다.

Neema sits in the street. Her ball is only one hour old, and now it is gone.

“문제없어.” 주마가 말한다. “오늘 밤에 오티에노 할아버지는 자. 우리가 담을 넘어서 공을 가져오자. 아무도 우리를 안 봐.”

“No problem,” says Juma. “Tonight Mr Otieno is asleep. We climb over the wall and get the ball. Nobody sees us.”

좋은 계획이다. 니마는 담을 본다. 니마는 토마토 세 개를 생각한다. “아니야.” 니마가 말한다. “오티에노 할아버지한테 갈 거야. 지금.”

The plan is good. Neema looks at the wall. She thinks about the three tomatoes. “No,” she says. “I’m going to Mr Otieno. Now.”

“너 미쳤어?” 티토가 묻는다.

“Are you crazy?” asks Tito.
