“He’s asleep,” Ana said quickly. “He’s upstairs, asleep. He’s all right.” Then she saw that this was not true, and that Michael could see it in her face. She took a breath. “No. He isn’t all right. We went to the hospital yesterday. He has Parkinson’s disease, Michael.”
For a moment Michael did not move at all. Then he walked the last few steps to the bakery, very slowly, like a much older man. He looked at the open door and the bright kitchen. Then he sat down on the step, next to the paper bag, with his long coat folded under him.
Ana understood that he had not sat on this step for fifteen years. She did not say anything. She sat down next to him. Behind them, Crumb came to the door, smelled Michael’s coat carefully and lay down across the doorway with a heavy sigh.
“He doesn’t know you,” Ana said. “Crumb, I mean. He’s only ten.”
“We had a dog called Toast when I was a boy,” Michael said. His voice was very quiet. “My mother named him. She named everything after food.” He looked at his hands. “Tell me what the doctor said. All of it. Please.”
So Ana told him. She told him about the tests and the young doctor with the warm hands. She told him that the disease would slowly get worse, and that the tablets could help, maybe for years. She told him that heavy work at night was not a good idea any more. She told him about the keys.
When she had finished, Michael put his face in his hands. He did not cry. He just sat there, breathing slowly, while the river moved past in the dark. Ana waited. She had learned in this town that waiting was sometimes the kindest thing you could do.
“His hands,” Michael said at last. “He had the best hands in Yorkshire. People came from Leeds for his bread. When I was a boy, I used to watch his hands and think they could do anything.” He laughed, a small broken laugh. “And now his hands can’t hold a tray, and I’m sitting on his step like a thief.”
“You’re not a thief. He puts the bread out for you. He has done it for fifteen years.”
“What did you do?” Ana asked. “For fifteen years. Where did you go?”
Michael shrugged. “Everywhere, and nowhere. Liverpool first, then Birmingham, then a lot of small towns. I worked in factories and warehouses and once on a fishing boat in Scotland. I never stayed anywhere longer than two years. Six years ago I bought the Second Chance from an old man in Manchester. A house that moves, he called it. That was what I wanted. A house that could leave.”
