It was her first trip alone. Her husband died two years ago. They always travelled together.
« Bonjour. Où allez-vous aujourd’hui ? »
At the check-in desk, a young woman smiled at her. “Good morning. Where are you going today?”
« Bangkok, » a dit Helga. « En Thaïlande. » Sa voix était très petite.
“Bangkok,” said Helga. “In Thailand.” Her voice was very small.
« Je peux voir votre passeport, s’il vous plaît ? »
“Can I see your passport, please?”
Helga lui a donné le passeport. La femme a regardé la photo, puis Helga. « Merci. »
Helga gave her the passport. The woman looked at the photo, then at Helga. “Thank you. Please put your suitcase here.”
Helga a posé la valise. « C’est parfait, » a dit la femme. « Vous voulez une place côté fenêtre ? »
Helga put the suitcase down. “That’s fine,” said the woman. “Would you like a window seat?”
« Oui, s’il vous plaît. J’aimerais tout voir. »
“Yes, please. I’d like to see everything.”
« Voici votre carte d’embarquement. Porte douze. Le vol part à sept heures. »
“Here is your boarding pass. Gate twelve. The flight leaves at seven.”
Helga put the boarding pass and the passport in her red bag. She closed the bag carefully.
At gate twelve, she sat down by the big window. It was still dark outside. Snow fell outside.
At half past six, a man spoke over the speakers. “Flight 412 to Bangkok has a delay. The new time is nine o’clock.”
