शुक्रवार। बिक्री का दिन।

Friday. The day of the sale.

नौ बजे सोफ़ी तैयार हो जाती है। सफ़ेद ब्लेज़र, लाल लिपस्टिक, बाँह के नीचे नीला फ़ोल्डर। वह दालान में नोना के पुराने आईने में खुद को देखती है।

At nine o’clock, Sophie is ready. White blazer, red lipstick, the blue folder under her arm. She looks at herself in Nonna’s old mirror in the hall.

सोफ़ी: नोटरी ग्यारह बजे इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं। मार्को भी आ रहा है। देर मत करना, प्रिय।

Sophie: The notary is waiting at eleven. Marco is coming too. Don’t be late, darling.

“पाँच खत, सोफ़ी। अभी पाँच खत बाकी हैं। नोना ने लिखा था: आखिरी खत से पहले मत बेचना।”

“Five letters, Sophie. There are still five letters. Nonna wrote: don’t sell before the last one.”

सोफ़ी: टॉम। ये एक बूढ़ी औरत के खत हैं। और यह पच्चीस लाख यूरो की बात है।

Sophie: Tom. They are letters from an old woman. This is two and a half million euros.

वह एक हल्की सी आवाज़ के साथ अपनी लिपस्टिक बंद करती है।

She closes her lipstick with a little click.

मैं दो कॉफ़ी बनाता हूँ और एलेना को ढूँढता हूँ। वह नोना के छोटे दफ़्तर में ज़मीन पर बैठी है, डिब्बों के बीच।

I make two coffees and look for Elena. She is in Nonna’s little office, on the floor, between cardboard boxes.

एलेना: मैं दफ़्तर समेट रही हूँ। मार्को के लोगों के लिए। आखिरी मेहमान रविवार को चले जाएँगे।

Elena: I’m packing the office. For Marco’s people. The last guests leave on Sunday.

“एलेना, मैंने अभी दस्तख़त नहीं किए हैं।”

“Elena, I haven’t signed yet.”

एलेना: लेकिन तुम करोगे। ग्यारह बजे।

Elena: But you will. At eleven.

वह कॉफ़ी लेती है। वह मेरी तरफ़ नहीं देखती। सबसे ऊपर वाले डिब्बे पर झील की एक पुरानी तस्वीर रखी है, उल्टी पड़ी हुई।

She takes the coffee. She doesn’t look at me. On the top box lies an old photo of the lake, face down.
