Secretul lui Jess

Nimeni nu a răspuns. Priya s-a uitat la Ana. Ana s-a uitat la pătratul de hârtie de pe masă. Repede, l-a pus înapoi în buzunar.

Nobody answered. Priya looked at Ana. Ana looked at the paper square on the table. Fast, she put it back in her pocket.

„Jess, draga mea”, a spus Priya. „Vorbeam doar despre vremurile vechi. Despre brutărie.”

“Jess, my dear,” Priya said. “We were only talking about the old days. About the bakery.”

„Despre el”, a spus Jess. „V-am auzit. I-ai spus numele.” Ea s-a uitat la Ana. „Bunicul te-a rugat să afli despre el? Așa este?”

“About him,” Jess said. “I heard you. You said his name.” She looked at Ana. “Did Grandad ask you to find out about him? Is that it?”

„Nu! Walter nu știe nimic”, a spus Ana. „Am întrebat-o pe Priya. Am vrut să înțeleg. Despre incendiu.”

“No! Walter doesn’t know anything,” Ana said. “I asked Priya. I wanted to understand. About the fire.”

„Atunci întreabă-mă pe mine”, a spus Jess. Vocea ei a fost dură. „Îți pot spune eu. Este o poveste foarte scurtă. Tatăl meu a dat foc la brutărie, iar a doua zi a fugit. L-a lăsat pe tatăl lui. M-a lăsat pe mine. Aveam doi ani. Sfârșit.”

“Then ask me,” Jess said. Her voice was hard. “I can tell you. It’s a very short story. My father burned down the bakery, and the next day he ran away. He left his father. He left me. I was two. The end.”

„Jess…”, a început Priya.

“Jess…” Priya started.

„Am intrat pentru un pix, Priya. Doar un pix. Pentru examenul meu de mâine.” Jess a luat un pix albastru din cutia de pe tejghea și a pus o liră lângă el. Apoi a ieșit. Clopoțelul de deasupra ușii a sunat în urma ei.

“I came in for a pen, Priya. Just a pen. For my exam tomorrow.” Jess took a blue pen from the box on the counter and put a pound next to it. Then she walked out. The bell over the door rang behind her.

„Mergi după ea”, a spus Priya încet. „Și Ana, nu spune nimic despre bărbat. Nimic. Nu lui Jess.”

“Go after her,” Priya said quietly. “And Ana, say nothing about the man. Nothing. Not to Jess.”

Ana a fugit afară. Jess nu mergea acasă. Mergea repede pe Bridge Street, spre râu. Ana a ajuns-o pe podul vechi de piatră.

Ana ran out. Jess wasn’t going home. She was walking fast down Bridge Street, to the river. Ana caught her on the old stone bridge.

„Jess, așteaptă. Îmi pare rău. Chiar îmi pare rău. Nu era treaba mea.”

“Jess, wait. I’m sorry. Really. It was not my business.”

Jess s-a oprit. S-a uitat lung în jos, la apă. Când a vorbit din nou, vocea ei a fost diferită. Obosită, nu furioasă.

Jess stopped. She looked down at the water for a long time. When she spoke again, her voice was different. Tired, not angry.

„Toată lumea din acest oraș știe povestea”, a spus ea. „La școală, când eram mică, un băiat mi-a spus: tatăl tău a ars brutăria. Nu am știut ce să spun. Am mers acasă și l-am întrebat pe bunicul. El nu a răspuns. A mers în brutărie și a copt pâine toată noaptea.”

“Everybody in this town knows the story,” she said. “At school, when I was little, a boy said to me: your dad burned down the bakery. I didn’t know what to say. I went home and asked Grandad. He didn’t answer. He went into the bakery and made bread all night.”

„Îmi pare rău, Jess.”

“I’m sorry, Jess.”

„Este în regulă. Nu am nevoie de un tată. Îl am pe bunicul.” Și-a dat jos ghiozdanul de pe spate. „Poți să ții un secret, Ana? Unul adevărat?”

“It’s fine. I don’t need a father. I have Grandad.” She took her school bag off her back. “Can you keep a secret, Ana? A real one?”
