Kimse cevap vermedi. Priya, Ana’ya baktı. Ana masadaki kare kâğıda baktı. Onu çabucak tekrar cebine koydu.
Nobody answered. Priya looked at Ana. Ana looked at the paper square on the table. Fast, she put it back in her pocket.
“Jess, canım,” dedi Priya. “Biz sadece eski günlerden bahsediyorduk. Fırın hakkında.”
“Jess, my dear,” Priya said. “We were only talking about the old days. About the bakery.”
“Onun hakkında,” dedi Jess. “Sizi duydum. Onun adını söylediniz.” Ana’ya baktı. “Dedem onu öğrenmeni mi istedi? Öyle mi?”
“About him,” Jess said. “I heard you. You said his name.” She looked at Ana. “Did Grandad ask you to find out about him? Is that it?”
“Hayır! Walter hiçbir şey bilmiyor,” dedi Ana. “Ben Priya’ya sordum. Anlamak istedim. Yangın hakkında.”
“No! Walter doesn’t know anything,” Ana said. “I asked Priya. I wanted to understand. About the fire.”
“O zaman bana sor,” dedi Jess. Sesi sertti. “Sana anlatabilirim. Bu çok kısa bir hikâye. Babam fırını yaktı ve ertesi gün kaçtı. Babasını bıraktı. Beni bıraktı. Ben iki yaşındaydım. Bitti.”
“Then ask me,” Jess said. Her voice was hard. “I can tell you. It’s a very short story. My father burned down the bakery, and the next day he ran away. He left his father. He left me. I was two. The end.”
“Jess…” diye başladı Priya.
“Jess…” Priya started.
“Ben bir kalem için geldim, Priya. Sadece bir kalem. Yarınki sınavım için.” Jess tezgâhtaki kutudan mavi bir kalem aldı ve yanına bir pound koydu. Sonra dışarı çıktı. Kapının üstündeki zil arkasından çaldı.
“I came in for a pen, Priya. Just a pen. For my exam tomorrow.” Jess took a blue pen from the box on the counter and put a pound next to it. Then she walked out. The bell over the door rang behind her.
“Onun arkasından git,” dedi Priya sessizce. “Ve Ana, adam hakkında hiçbir şey söyleme. Hiçbir şey. Jess’e değil.”
“Go after her,” Priya said quietly. “And Ana, say nothing about the man. Nothing. Not to Jess.”
Ana dışarı koştu. Jess eve gitmiyordu. Bridge Street boyunca nehre doğru hızlı yürüyordu. Ana onu eski taş köprüde yakaladı.
Ana ran out. Jess wasn’t going home. She was walking fast down Bridge Street, to the river. Ana caught her on the old stone bridge.
“Jess, bekle. Özür dilerim. Gerçekten. Bu benim işim değildi.”
“Jess, wait. I’m sorry. Really. It was not my business.”
Jess durdu. Uzun bir süre suya baktı. Tekrar konuştuğunda sesi farklıydı. Yorgundu, kızgın değildi.
Jess stopped. She looked down at the water for a long time. When she spoke again, her voice was different. Tired, not angry.
“Bu kasabadaki herkes bu hikâyeyi biliyor,” dedi. “Okulda, ben küçükken bir çocuk bana dedi: baban fırını yaktı. Ne diyeceğimi bilemedim. Eve gittim ve Dedeme sordum. O cevap vermedi. Fırına girdi ve bütün gece ekmek yaptı.”
“Everybody in this town knows the story,” she said. “At school, when I was little, a boy said to me: your dad burned down the bakery. I didn’t know what to say. I went home and asked Grandad. He didn’t answer. He went into the bakery and made bread all night.”
“Üzgünüm, Jess.”
“I’m sorry, Jess.”
“Sorun değil. Benim bir babaya ihtiyacım yok. Dedem var.” Sırt çantasını sırtından çıkardı. “Bir sır tutabilir misin, Ana? Gerçek bir sır?”
“It’s fine. I don’t need a father. I have Grandad.” She took her school bag off her back. “Can you keep a secret, Ana? A real one?”
