おばあさんとブタ

あるおばあさんが家を掃除していると、曲がった小さな六ペンス銀貨を見つけた。「この小さな六ペンスで何をしようかね」とおばあさんは言った。「市場へ行って、子ブタを一匹買おう」

An old woman was sweeping her house, and she found a little crooked sixpence. “What,” said she, “shall I do with this little sixpence? I will go to market, and buy a little pig.”

家に帰る途中、踏み越え段のところに来た。しかし、子ブタは段を越えようとしなかった。

As she was coming home, she came to a stile: but the piggy wouldn’t go over the stile.

もう少し進むと、犬に出会った。そこでおばあさんは犬に言った。「イヌや、ブタをかんじょくれ。子ブタが段を越えてくれないのさ。このままじゃ今夜うちに帰れないよ」だが、犬はことわった。

She went a little further, and she met a dog. So she said to the dog: “Dog! bite pig; piggy won’t go over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the dog wouldn’t.

もう少し進むと、棒に出会った。そこでおばあさんは言った。「棒や、棒や、イヌをたたいておくれ。イヌがブタをかんでくれないのさ。子ブタが段を越えてくれないし、このままじゃ今夜うちに帰れないよ」だが、棒はことわった。

She went a little further, and she met a stick. So she said: “Stick! stick! beat dog! dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the stick wouldn’t.

もう少し進むと、火に出会った。そこでおばあさんは言った。「火や、火や、棒を燃やしておくれ。棒がイヌをたたいてくれないのさ。イヌがブタをかんでくれないし、子ブタが段を越えてくれない。このままじゃ今夜うちに帰れないよ」だが、火はことわった。

She went a little further, and she met a fire. So she said: “Fire! fire! burn stick; stick won’t beat dog; dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the fire wouldn’t.

もう少し進むと、水に出会った。そこでおばあさんは言った。「水や、水や、火を消しておくれ。火が棒を燃やしてくれないのさ。棒がイヌをたたいてくれないし、イヌがブタをかんでくれない。子ブタが段を越えてくれないし、このままじゃ今夜うちに帰れないよ」だが、水はことわった。

She went a little further, and she met some water. So she said: “Water, water! quench fire; fire won’t burn stick; stick won’t beat dog; dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.” But the water wouldn’t.

もう少し進むと、雄牛に出会った。そこでおばあさんは言った。「牛や、牛や、水を飲んでおくれ。水が火を消してくれないのさ。火が棒を燃やしてくれないし、棒がイヌをたたいてくれない。イヌがブタをかんでくれないし、子ブタが段を越えてくれない。このままじゃ今夜うちに帰れないよ」

She went a little further, and she met an ox. So she said: “Ox! ox! drink water; water won’t quench fire; fire won’t burn stick; stick won’t beat dog; dog won’t bite pig; piggy won’t get over the stile; and I shan’t get home to-night.”

だが、雄牛はことわった。
