小さなミス

One small mistake

ワンジルはナイロビに住んでいました。二十九才で、美容師でした。

Wanjiru lived in Nairobi. She was twenty-nine, and she was a hairdresser.

彼女は町の中心の忙しい店で働いていました。でも、自分の店ではありませんでした。店長がほとんどのお金を取りました。

She worked in a busy salon in the city centre. But the salon was not hers. The owner kept most of the money.

ワンジルは毎月少しずつお金をためました。彼女には計画がありました。いつか自分の店を持ちたかったのです。

Every month, Wanjiru saved a little. She had a plan. One day, she wanted her own salon.

金曜日の夕方、彼女は帰りのバスにすわって、銀行のアプリを開きました。口座には210,000シリングありました。

On Friday evening, she sat on the bus home and opened her bank app. There were 210,000 shillings in her account.

「21万シリング」と彼女は静かに言いました。「あと9万あれば、始められるわ」

“Two hundred and ten thousand,” she said quietly. “Ninety thousand more, and I can start.”

そのとき、電話が鳴りました。お母さんからでした。

Then her phone rang. It was her mother.

「ワンジル？ お母さんよ。元気かい、我が子よ？」

“Wanjiru? It’s Mama. How are you, my child?”

「元気よ、お母さん。今バスに乗っているの。何かあった？」

“I’m fine, Mama. I’m on the bus. Is everything OK?”

「大丈夫だよ。まあ、ほとんどね。また屋根のことなんだ。昨日の夜は大雨で、台所に水が入ってきてね」

“Everything is fine. Well, almost. It’s the roof again. There was a lot of rain last night, and the water came into the kitchen.”

「また？ 村の人に電話したの？」

“Again? Did you call the man from the village?”

「ああ。今朝来て見てくれたよ。『5万シリングだ』って。『月曜日から始められる』って言っていたよ」

“Yes. He came this morning and looked at it. ‘Fifty thousand,’ he said. ‘I can start on Monday.’”

ワンジルは銀行のアプリの数字を見ました。50,000シリングは、5か月分のためたお金でした。

Wanjiru looked at the number in her bank app. Fifty thousand shillings was five months of saving.

「すまないね、我が子よ」とお母さんは言いました。「お店のことは知っているよ。たのみたくはないんだけどね」

“I’m sorry, my child,” said her mother. “I know about your salon. I don’t like asking you.”
