Một lỗi nhỏ
One small mistake
Wanjiru lived in Nairobi. She was twenty-nine, and she was a hairdresser.
Cô làm việc trong một tiệm làm tóc đông khách ở trung tâm thành phố. Nhưng tiệm đó không phải của cô. Người chủ giữ phần lớn số tiền.
She worked in a busy salon in the city centre. But the salon was not hers. The owner kept most of the money.
Every month, Wanjiru saved a little. She had a plan. One day, she wanted her own salon.
On Friday evening, she sat on the bus home and opened her bank app. There were 210,000 shillings in her account.
“Hai trăm mười nghìn,” cô nói nhỏ. “Thêm chín mươi nghìn nữa là mình có thể bắt đầu.”
“Two hundred and ten thousand,” she said quietly. “Ninety thousand more, and I can start.”
Rồi điện thoại của cô reo. Đó là mẹ cô.
Then her phone rang. It was her mother.
“Wanjiru hả con? Mẹ đây. Con khỏe không, con gái?”
“Wanjiru? It’s Mama. How are you, my child?”
“Con khỏe, mẹ ơi. Con đang ở trên xe buýt. Mọi chuyện vẫn ổn chứ mẹ?”
“I’m fine, Mama. I’m on the bus. Is everything OK?”
“Mọi chuyện đều ổn. À, gần như ổn. Lại là mái nhà. Đêm qua mưa to lắm, nước chảy vào bếp rồi.”
“Everything is fine. Well, almost. It’s the roof again. There was a lot of rain last night, and the water came into the kitchen.”
“Lại bị nữa ạ? Mẹ có gọi người thợ trong làng không?”
“Again? Did you call the man from the village?”
“Có. Sáng nay chú ấy đến xem rồi. Chú ấy nói: ‘Năm mươi nghìn nhé. Thứ Hai tôi có thể bắt đầu.’”
“Yes. He came this morning and looked at it. ‘Fifty thousand,’ he said. ‘I can start on Monday.’”
Wanjiru looked at the number in her bank app. Fifty thousand shillings was five months of saving.
“Mẹ xin lỗi, con gái,” mẹ cô nói. “Mẹ biết con đang tiết kiệm mở tiệm. Mẹ không thích hỏi xin tiền con đâu.”
“I’m sorry, my child,” said her mother. “I know about your salon. I don’t like asking you.”
