Jeden mały błąd
One small mistake
Wanjiru mieszkała w Nairobi. Miała dwadzieścia dziewięć lat i była fryzjerką.
Wanjiru lived in Nairobi. She was twenty-nine, and she was a hairdresser.
Pracowała w ruchliwym salonie w centrum miasta. Ale salon nie należał do niej. Właściciel zatrzymywał większość pieniędzy.
She worked in a busy salon in the city centre. But the salon was not hers. The owner kept most of the money.
Co miesiąc Wanjiru oszczędzała trochę pieniędzy. Miała plan. Pewnego dnia chciała mieć własny salon.
Every month, Wanjiru saved a little. She had a plan. One day, she wanted her own salon.
W piątek wieczorem siedziała w autobusie do domu i otworzyła aplikację bankową. Na jej koncie było 210 000 szylingów.
On Friday evening, she sat on the bus home and opened her bank app. There were 210,000 shillings in her account.
„Dwieście dziesięć tysięcy” – powiedziała cicho. „Jeszcze dziewięćdziesiąt tysięcy i mogę zacząć”.
“Two hundred and ten thousand,” she said quietly. “Ninety thousand more, and I can start.”
Wtedy zadzwonił jej telefon. To była jej mama.
Then her phone rang. It was her mother.
„Wanjiru? To mama. Jak się masz, moje dziecko?”.
“Wanjiru? It’s Mama. How are you, my child?”
„Dobrze, mamo. Jestem w autobusie. Wszystko w porządku?”.
“I’m fine, Mama. I’m on the bus. Is everything OK?”
„Wszystko w porządku. Cóż, prawie. Znowu ten dach. W nocy bardzo padało i woda wlała się do kuchni”.
“Everything is fine. Well, almost. It’s the roof again. There was a lot of rain last night, and the water came into the kitchen.”
„Znowu? Zadzwoniłaś do tego mężczyzny ze wsi?”.
“Again? Did you call the man from the village?”
„Tak. Przyjechał rano i popatrzył na dach. «Pięćdziesiąt tysięcy» – powiedział. «Mogę zacząć w poniedziałek»”.
“Yes. He came this morning and looked at it. ‘Fifty thousand,’ he said. ‘I can start on Monday.’”
Wanjiru spojrzała na liczbę w swojej aplikacji bankowej. Pięćdziesiąt tysięcy szylingów to było pięć miesięcy oszczędzania.
Wanjiru looked at the number in her bank app. Fifty thousand shillings was five months of saving.
„Przepraszam, moje dziecko” – powiedziała mama. „Wiem o twoim salonie. Nie lubię cię prosić”.
“I’m sorry, my child,” said her mother. “I know about your salon. I don’t like asking you.”
