Küçük bir hata
One small mistake
Wanjiru Nairobi’de yaşadı. Yirmi dokuz yaşındaydı ve kuafördü.
Wanjiru lived in Nairobi. She was twenty-nine, and she was a hairdresser.
Şehir merkezinde yoğun bir salonda çalıştı. Ama salon onun değildi. Paranın çoğunu sahibi aldı.
She worked in a busy salon in the city centre. But the salon was not hers. The owner kept most of the money.
Wanjiru her ay biraz para biriktirdi. Bir planı vardı. Bir gün kendi salonunu istedi.
Every month, Wanjiru saved a little. She had a plan. One day, she wanted her own salon.
Cuma akşamı eve giden otobüse bindi ve banka uygulamasını açtı. Hesabında 210.000 şilin vardı.
On Friday evening, she sat on the bus home and opened her bank app. There were 210,000 shillings in her account.
Sessizce, “İki yüz on bin,” dedi. “Doksan bin daha, sonra başlayabilirim.”
“Two hundred and ten thousand,” she said quietly. “Ninety thousand more, and I can start.”
Sonra telefonu çaldı. Arayan annesiydi.
Then her phone rang. It was her mother.
“Wanjiru? Ben Mama. Nasılsın çocuğum?”
“Wanjiru? It’s Mama. How are you, my child?”
“İyiyim Mama. Otobüsteyim. Her şey yolunda mı?”
“I’m fine, Mama. I’m on the bus. Is everything OK?”
“Her şey yolunda. Yani, neredeyse. Yine çatı yüzünden. Dün gece çok yağmur yağdı ve su mutfağa girdi.”
“Everything is fine. Well, almost. It’s the roof again. There was a lot of rain last night, and the water came into the kitchen.”
“Yine mi? Köydeki adamı aradın mı?”
“Again? Did you call the man from the village?”
“Evet. Bu sabah geldi ve çatıya baktı. ‘Elli bin,’ dedi. ‘Pazartesi günü başlayabilirim.’”
“Yes. He came this morning and looked at it. ‘Fifty thousand,’ he said. ‘I can start on Monday.’”
Wanjiru banka uygulamasındaki numaraya baktı. Elli bin şilin, beş aylık birikimdi.
Wanjiru looked at the number in her bank app. Fifty thousand shillings was five months of saving.
Annesi, “Özür dilerim çocuğum,” dedi. “Salonunu biliyorum. Senden istemekten hoşlanmıyorum.”
“I’m sorry, my child,” said her mother. “I know about your salon. I don’t like asking you.”
