रमज़ान के पूरे तीस रोज़ के बाद आज ईद आई है। कितना मनोहर; कितना सुहावना प्रभात है।

After thirty whole days of the Ramzan fast, Eid has come today. What a lovely, what a delightful morning it is.

वृक्षों पर कुछ अजीब हरियाली है, खेतों में कुछ अजीब रौनक है, आसमान पर कुछ अजीब लालिमा है।

There is a wondrous green on the trees, a wondrous brightness in the fields, a wondrous flush in the sky.

ईदगाह (Idgah), Premchand (1930s), with our own English rendering.

How it works

Upload the book, choose English, and look at the free preview of the opening pages, side by side. If it reads well, translate the whole book and read it in the browser, or download it as a PDF, an EPUB, or a Kindle file. More about translating a book.

Where to find Hindi books

Hindi Wikisource has Premchand's stories and many other classics for free. Your own DRM-free EPUB, a text-based PDF or a Word file all work; a PDF that is only a scan is read with text recognition, so check the free preview.

Reading Hindi with English beside it

Two vocabularies in one sentence

Hindi draws on Sanskrit and on Persian and Arabic at once: in a single line of Premchand, prabhat (morning) and manohar (lovely) sit next to raunak (bustle) and ajeeb (strange). English flattens them into one register; the original beside it shows which word the author reached for.

Aap, tum, tu

Hindi has three words for "you", from respectful to intimate, and a character's choice says a lot. English has only one. With the Hindi beside it you can see when someone switches, and what that tells you.
