Turkish to English

Translate a Turkish book into English, and keep the Turkish

Upload a Turkish novel or story collection, a classic or a new book with no English edition, and read it with English beside every paragraph, so the long Turkish words never stand between you and the story.

Ahırın avlusunda oynarken aşağıda, gümüş söğütler altında görünmeyen derenin hazin şırıltısını işitirdik.

Playing in the stable yard, we would hear below us the mournful murmur of the stream, hidden under the silver willows.

Evimiz iç çitin büyük kestane ağaçları arkasında kaybolmuş gibiydi.

Our house seemed lost behind the great chestnut trees of the inner fence.

Kaşağı (The Currycomb), Ömer Seyfettin (1926), with our own English rendering.

How it works

Upload the book, choose English, and look at the free preview of the opening pages, side by side. If it reads well, translate the whole book and read it in the browser, or download it as a PDF, an EPUB, or a Kindle file. More about translating a book.

Where to find Turkish books

Turkish Wikisource (Vikikaynak) has stories by Ömer Seyfettin and other early writers for free. Your own DRM-free EPUB, a text-based PDF or a Word file all work; books locked to a store's app do not.

Reading Turkish with English beside it

One word, a whole phrase

Turkish builds meaning by adding endings: işitirdik is "we used to hear", three English words in one. With the English beside it you can take a long word apart and see which ending carried which piece of the meaning.

Old words in new letters

Writers from before 1928 wrote in Arabic script; their books are read today in Latin letters, often full of Ottoman words that modern Turkish has replaced. The English beside them keeps an old story as easy to follow as a new one.

Questions

Can I translate a Turkish book into English and keep the Turkish?

Yes, that is what it does: each Turkish paragraph stays, with its English beside it, in the browser, as a PDF, or as an EPUB or Kindle file.

Can I learn Turkish with it?

Yes: read the Turkish first and look across only when you need to, or hide the English until you tap it. The free library also has Turkish stories by level.
