Walter nie odpowiada. Po minucie zabiera ręce z twarzy. Wstaje. Otwiera okno i dym ucieka.
Walter doesn’t answer. After a minute, he takes his hands from his face. He gets up. He opens the window, and the smoke goes out.
„Rób więcej bułek” — mówi. „Autobus jest za dziesięć piąta”. I pracuje. Nie mówi ani słowa o ogniu. Ana nie pyta. Ale myśli o tym całą noc.
“Make more rolls,” he says. “The bus is at ten to five.” And he works. He doesn’t say a word about the fire. Ana doesn’t ask. But she thinks about it all night.
Po południu Ana ma wolny dzień. Schodzi po schodach. Jess jest w kuchni. Ma torbę szkolną na podłodze i słuchawki na szyi.
In the afternoon, Ana has a free day. She comes down the stairs. Jess is in the kitchen. She has her school bag on the floor and her headphones round her neck.
„Jess, gdzie jest targ?” — pyta Ana. „Chcę kupić kurtkę. Moja kurtka nie jest ciepła”.
“Jess, where is the market?” Ana asks. “I want to buy a jacket. My jacket is not warm.”
Jess patrzy na kurtkę Any. „To nie jest kurtka. To jest koszula z ambicjami. Chodź. Mogę pokazać ci miasto. Jest bardzo małe. Trzeba na to dziesięć minut”.
Jess looks at Ana’s jacket. “That’s not a jacket. That’s a shirt with ideas. Come on. I can show you the town. It’s very small. It takes ten minutes.”
Idą w górę Bridge Street. Na górze jest duży plac ze starym kamiennym domem. „To jest ratusz” — mówi Jess. „A to jest rynek. Targ jest we wtorki i w soboty”.
They walk up Bridge Street. At the top, there is a big square with an old stone building. “That’s the town hall,” Jess says. “And this is the market square. The market is on Tuesdays and Saturdays.”
Dziś jest wtorek. Na targu jest dużo ludzi. Ana kupuje ciepłą zieloną kurtkę. Kosztuje dwanaście funtów. Jess mówi, że jest bardzo brzydka. Ana mówi, że jest bardzo ciepła.
Today is Tuesday. There are a lot of people in the market. Ana buys a warm green jacket. It is twelve pounds. Jess says it is very ugly. Ana says it is very warm.
Potem zaczyna padać deszcz. Wiatr jest zimny. „Witamy w Hollin Bridge” — mówi Jess. „Deszcz pada tutaj trzysta dni w roku”.
Then it starts to rain. The wind is cold. “Welcome to Hollin Bridge,” Jess says. “It rains here three hundred days a year.”
Schodzą nad rzekę. Jess pokazuje Anie stary kamienny most. „Nazwa miasta pochodzi od tego mostu. Hollin Bridge. Jest bardzo stary”.
They go down to the river. Jess shows Ana the old stone bridge. “The town’s name is from this bridge. Hollin Bridge. It’s very old.”
Z mostu idą ścieżką nad rzeką. Za piekarnią ścieżka idzie w lewo, do kanału. Na kanale stoją długie, wąskie łodzie w wielu kolorach.
From the bridge, they walk along the river path. After the bakery, the path goes left, to the canal. On the canal, there are long, thin boats in many colours.
„Ludzie mieszkają na tych łodziach” — mówi Jess. „Cały rok. W deszczu, w śniegu. Myślę, że są szaleni”.
“People live on these boats,” Jess says. “All year. In the rain, in the snow. I think they’re crazy.”
Anie podobają się te łodzie. Czerwona łódź ma kwiaty na dachu. Niebieska łódź ma rower na dachu. Ciemnozielona łódź jest bardzo cicha. Na jej dachu leży mały brązowy kawałek papieru. Jest mokry od deszczu.
Ana likes the boats. A red boat has flowers on the roof. A blue boat has a bicycle on the roof. A dark green boat is very quiet. On its roof, there is a small brown square of paper. It is wet from the rain.
Ana patrzy na niego przez chwilę. Potem Jess coś mówi i Ana patrzy na Jess. Nie myśli już o papierze.
Ana looks at it for a second. Then Jess says something, and Ana looks at Jess. She doesn’t think about the paper again.
„Masz rodzinę, Ana?” — pyta Jess.
“Have you got a family, Ana?” Jess asks.
