तुम्हारा काम नहीं

ब्रिज स्ट्रीट पर अंधेरा और गीला है। प्रिया की दुकान में एक रोशनी है और बस स्टॉप पर एक रोशनी है। एक बिल्ली कार के नीचे बैठती है। लेकिन लोग नहीं हैं। सड़क पर कोई नहीं है।

Bridge Street is dark and wet. There is a light in Priya’s shop and a light at the bus stop. A cat sits under a car. But there are no people. Nobody is in the street.

ऐना अंदर वापस आती है। वह दरवाज़ा बंद करती है। रसोई में, वॉल्टर के हाथों में कार्ड के दो टुकड़े हैं। वह उनको अपनी कमीज़ की जेब में रखता है, ध्यान से।

Ana comes back in. She closes the door. In the kitchen, Walter has the two pieces of the card in his hands. He puts them in the pocket of his shirt, carefully.

“केक के लिए धन्यवाद,” वह कहता है। “सबको शुभ रात्रि।” और वह ऊपर जाता है। पार्टी ख़त्म है।

“Thank you for the cake,” he says. “Good night, everybody.” And he goes upstairs. The party is over.

प्रिया अपना कोट पहनती है। दरवाज़े पर, वह ऐना को देखती है। “आज रात उससे प्यार से पेश आओ, मेरी प्यारी,” वह कहती है। फिर वह सड़क पार करके अपनी दुकान पर जाती है।

Priya puts on her coat. At the door, she looks at Ana. “Be kind to him tonight, my dear,” she says. Then she goes across the road to her shop.

डैनियल मेज़ से अपना मग लेता है। “ऐना,” वह धीरे से कहता है। “एम को मत ढूँढ़ो। ठीक है? यह एक दुख भरी कहानी है।” और वह भी जाता है।

Daniel takes his mug from the table. “Ana,” he says quietly. “Don’t look for M. OK? It’s a sad story.” And he goes too.

ऐना रसोई में केक और क्रंब के साथ अकेली है। वह सोचती है। हर रात ब्रेड का एक थैला। काग़ज़ का एक साफ़ चौकोर टुकड़ा। एक जला हुआ निशान। बिना डाक टिकट का एक कार्ड। और सब कहते हैं: मत पूछो।

Ana is alone in the kitchen with the cake and Crumb. She thinks. A bag of bread every night. A neat paper square. A burnt sign. A card with no stamp. And everybody says: don’t ask.

“ठीक है, क्रंब,” वह कहती है। “मैं नहीं पूछती। मैं देखती हूँ।”

“OK, Crumb,” she says. “I don’t ask. I look.”

उस रात, तीन बजे, वॉल्टर थैले को पीछे की सीढ़ी पर रखता है। फिर वह काम शुरू करता है। ऐना उसके साथ आटा गूँथती है। वह थैले के बारे में कुछ नहीं कहती।

That night, at three o’clock, Walter puts the bag on the back step. Then he starts work. Ana makes the dough with him. She doesn’t say anything about the bag.

साढ़े तीन बजे, वॉल्टर ओवन पर व्यस्त है। ऐना स्टोर रूम में जाती है। वहाँ अंधेरा है। स्टोर रूम में एक छोटी खिड़की है। खिड़की से वह पीछे की सीढ़ी देख सकती है।

At half past three, Walter is busy at the oven. Ana goes into the store room. It is dark there. In the store room, there is a small window. From the window, she can see the back step.

वह बत्ती नहीं जलाती। वह खिड़की पर खड़ी होती है और इंतज़ार करती है। थैला अब भी वहीं है, सीढ़ी पर। नदी काली है। कुछ भी नहीं हिलता।

She doesn’t turn on the light. She stands at the window and waits. The bag is still there, on the step. The river is black. Nothing moves.

पाँच मिनट। दस मिनट। फिर उसके पीछे बत्ती जलती है।

Five minutes. Ten minutes. Then the light goes on behind her.

वॉल्टर स्टोर रूम के दरवाज़े पर है। उसका चेहरा लाल है। “तुम क्या कर रही हो?”

Walter is at the door of the store room. His face is red. “What are you doing?”

“मैं… मैं देखना चाहती हूँ,” ऐना कहती है। “ब्रेड कौन लेता है?”

“I… I want to see,” Ana says. “Who takes the bread?”

“यह तुम्हारा काम नहीं है!” वॉल्टर की आवाज़ बहुत तेज़ है। क्रंब मेज़ के नीचे जाता है। “थैला तुम्हारा काम नहीं है। कार्ड तुम्हारा काम नहीं है। तुम यहाँ ब्रेड के लिए हो। केवल ब्रेड। क्या तुम समझती हो?”

“That is not your business!” Walter’s voice is very loud. Crumb goes under the table. “The bag is not your business. The card is not your business. You’re here for the bread. Only the bread. Do you understand?”
