Bridge Street karanlık ve ıslak. Priya’nın dükkânında bir ışık var. Otobüs durağında da bir ışık var. Bir arabanın altında bir kedi oturuyor. Ama hiç insan yok. Sokakta kimse yok.
Bridge Street is dark and wet. There is a light in Priya’s shop and a light at the bus stop. A cat sits under a car. But there are no people. Nobody is in the street.
Ana içeri dönüyor. Kapıyı kapatıyor. Mutfakta Walter kartın iki parçasını elinde tutuyor. Onları gömleğinin cebine koyuyor. Dikkatli koyuyor.
Ana comes back in. She closes the door. In the kitchen, Walter has the two pieces of the card in his hands. He puts them in the pocket of his shirt, carefully.
“Kek için teşekkür ederim,” diyor. “Herkese iyi geceler.” Ve üst kata çıkıyor. Parti bitti.
“Thank you for the cake,” he says. “Good night, everybody.” And he goes upstairs. The party is over.
Priya mantosunu giyiyor. Kapıda Ana’ya bakıyor. “Bu gece ona iyi davran, canım,” diyor. Sonra yolun karşısındaki dükkânına gidiyor.
Priya puts on her coat. At the door, she looks at Ana. “Be kind to him tonight, my dear,” she says. Then she goes across the road to her shop.
Daniel kupasını masadan alıyor. “Ana,” diyor sessizce. “M.’yi arama. Tamam mı? Bu üzücü bir hikâye.” Ve o da gidiyor.
Daniel takes his mug from the table. “Ana,” he says quietly. “Don’t look for M. OK? It’s a sad story.” And he goes too.
Ana is alone in the kitchen with the cake and Crumb. She thinks. A bag of bread every night. A neat paper square. A burnt sign. A card with no stamp. And everybody says: don’t ask.
“Tamam Crumb,” diyor. “Sormuyorum. Bakıyorum.”
“OK, Crumb,” she says. “I don’t ask. I look.”
O gece saat üçte Walter torbayı arka basamağa koyuyor. Sonra işe başlıyor. Ana onunla hamur yapıyor. Torba hakkında hiçbir şey söylemiyor.
That night, at three o’clock, Walter puts the bag on the back step. Then he starts work. Ana makes the dough with him. She doesn’t say anything about the bag.
Saat üç buçukta Walter fırında meşgul. Ana kente gidiyor. Orası karanlık. Depoda küçük bir pencere var. Pencereden arka basamağı görüyor.
At half past three, Walter is busy at the oven. Ana goes into the store room. It is dark there. In the store room, there is a small window. From the window, she can see the back step.
Işığı açmıyor. Pencerede duruyor ve bekliyor. Torba hâlâ orada, basamakta. Dere siyah. Hiçbir şey hareket etmiyor.
She doesn’t turn on the light. She stands at the window and waits. The bag is still there, on the step. The river is black. Nothing moves.
Beş dakika. On dakika. Sonra arkasında ışık yanıyor.
Five minutes. Ten minutes. Then the light goes on behind her.
Walter deponun kapısında duruyor. Yüzü kırmızı. “Ne yapıyorsun?”
Walter is at the door of the store room. His face is red. “What are you doing?”
“Ben… Görmek istiyorum,” diyor Ana. “Ekmeği kim alıyor?”
“I… I want to see,” Ana says. “Who takes the bread?”
“Bu seni ilgilendirmez!” Walter’ın sesi çok yüksek çıkıyor. Crumb masanın altına giriyor. “Torba seni ilgilendirmez. Kart seni ilgilendirmez. Sen ekmek için buradasın. Sadece ekmek için. Anlıyor musun?”
“That is not your business!” Walter’s voice is very loud. Crumb goes under the table. “The bag is not your business. The card is not your business. You’re here for the bread. Only the bread. Do you understand?”
