Opening the reader…
Na Bridge Street jest ciemno i mokro. Jest światło w sklepie Priyi i jest światło na przystanku autobusowym. Kot siedzi pod samochodem. Ale nie ma ludzi. Na ulicy nie ma nikogo.
Bridge Street is dark and wet. There is a light in Priya’s shop and a light at the bus stop. A cat sits under a car. But there are no people. Nobody is in the street.
Ana wraca do środka. Zamyka drzwi. W kuchni Walter trzyma w rękach dwa kawałki kartki. Ostrożnie wkłada je do kieszeni koszuli.
Ana comes back in. She closes the door. In the kitchen, Walter has the two pieces of the card in his hands. He puts them in the pocket of his shirt, carefully.
„Dziękuję za ciasto” – mówi. „Dobranoc wszystkim”. I idzie na górę. Przyjęcie jest skończone.
“Thank you for the cake,” he says. “Good night, everybody.” And he goes upstairs. The party is over.
Priya zakłada płaszcz. Przy drzwiach patrzy na Anę. „Bądź dla niego miła tej nocy, moja droga” – mówi. Potem przechodzi przez ulicę do swojego sklepu.
Priya puts on her coat. At the door, she looks at Ana. “Be kind to him tonight, my dear,” she says. Then she goes across the road to her shop.
Daniel bierze swój kubek ze stołu. „Ana” – mówi cicho. „Nie szukaj M., dobrze? To smutna historia”. I też wychodzi.
Daniel takes his mug from the table. “Ana,” he says quietly. “Don’t look for M. OK? It’s a sad story.” And he goes too.
Ana jest sama w kuchni z ciastem i Okruchem. Myśli. Torba z chlebem każdej nocy. Czysty papierowy kwadrat. Spalony znak. Karta bez znaczka. I wszyscy mówią: nie pytaj.
Ana is alone in the kitchen with the cake and Crumb. She thinks. A bag of bread every night. A neat paper square. A burnt sign. A card with no stamp. And everybody says: don’t ask.
„Dobrze, Okruch” – mówi. „Nie pytam. Patrzę”.
“OK, Crumb,” she says. “I don’t ask. I look.”
Tej nocy, o trzeciej, Walter kładzie torbę na tylnym schodku. Potem zaczyna pracę. Ana robi z nim ciasto. Nic nie mówi o torbie.
That night, at three o’clock, Walter puts the bag on the back step. Then he starts work. Ana makes the dough with him. She doesn’t say anything about the bag.
O wpół do czwartej Walter jest zajęty przy piecu. Ana wchodzi do magazynu. Jest tam ciemno. W magazynie jest małe okno. Z okna widzi tylny schodek.
At half past three, Walter is busy at the oven. Ana goes into the store room. It is dark there. In the store room, there is a small window. From the window, she can see the back step.
Nie włącza światła. Stoi przy oknie i czeka. Torba wciąż tam jest, na schodku. Rzeka jest czarna. Nic się nie rusza.
She doesn’t turn on the light. She stands at the window and waits. The bag is still there, on the step. The river is black. Nothing moves.
Pięć minut. Dziesięć minut. Wtedy za nią zapala się światło.
Five minutes. Ten minutes. Then the light goes on behind her.
Walter stoi w drzwiach magazynu. Ma czerwoną twarz. „Co robisz?”
Walter is at the door of the store room. His face is red. “What are you doing?”
„Ja… chcę zobaczyć” – mówi Ana. „Kto bierze chleb?”
“I… I want to see,” Ana says. “Who takes the bread?”
„To nie twoja sprawa!” – głos Waltera jest bardzo głośny. Okruch wchodzi pod stół. „Torba to nie twoja sprawa. Karta to nie twoja sprawa. Jesteś tu dla chleba. Tylko dla chleba. Rozumiesz?”
“That is not your business!” Walter’s voice is very loud. Crumb goes under the table. “The bag is not your business. The card is not your business. You’re here for the bread. Only the bread. Do you understand?”
