Ana se uită la fereastră. Apoi închide ochii. „Nu”, spune ea către cameră. „Nu în noaptea asta. În noaptea asta Walter este trist. În noaptea asta nu mă uit.”
Ana looks at the window. Then she closes her eyes. “No,” she says to the room. “Not tonight. Tonight Walter is sad. Tonight I don’t look.”
Ea se așază pe pat. Este foarte obosită. După cinci minute, ea doarme.
She lies down on the bed. She is very tired. After five minutes, she is asleep.
Duminică după-amiază, Ana coboară la bucătărie. Walter este la masă cu o cană de ceai. El ridică privirea. Ana se uită la el. Pentru o clipă, nimeni nu vorbește.
On Sunday afternoon, Ana goes down to the kitchen. Walter is at the table with a cup of tea. He looks up. Ana looks at him. For a moment, nobody speaks.
„Ceai?”, întreabă Walter.
“Tea?” Walter asks.
„Da, te rog.”
“Yes, please.”
El îi face o cană de ceai. Mâinile lui tremură. Puțin ceai ajunge pe masă. Ana nu spune nimic despre asta. Ea se așază. Ei își beau ceaiul.
He makes her a cup of tea. His hands shake, and some tea goes on the table. Ana doesn’t say anything about it. She sits down. They drink their tea.
„Îmi pare rău pentru noaptea trecută”, spune Ana. „Cămara. Nu e treaba mea. Știu.”
“I’m sorry about last night,” Ana says. “The store room. It is not my business. I know.”
„Și mie îmi pare rău”, spune Walter. „Vocea mea este foarte tare. Crumb stă sub masă o oră.” El își bea ceaiul. „Ești obosită, Ana. Șase nopți, în fiecare săptămână. Mâine noapte nu lucra. Dormi. Pot să fac pâinea singur.”
“I’m sorry too,” Walter says. “My voice is very loud. Crumb is under the table for one hour.” He drinks his tea. “You’re tired, Ana. Six nights, every week. Tomorrow night, don’t work. Sleep. I can do the bread alone.”
„Ești sigur? Mâinile tale…”
“Are you sure? Your hands…”
„Mâinile mele au șaptezeci și doi de ani. Ele pot să facă pâine pentru o noapte.” Și apoi el zâmbește. Un zâmbet mic, dar adevărat.
“My hands are seventy-two years old. They can make bread for one night.” And then he smiles. A small smile, but a real one.
Luni noaptea, Ana merge la culcare la ora zece. Dar nu poate să doarmă. Corpul ei este corpul unui brutar acum. Noaptea, el vrea să lucreze.
On Monday night, Ana goes to bed at ten o’clock. But she can’t sleep. Her body is a baker’s body now. At night, it wants to work.
La trei fără zece, ea aude ușa din spate. Se ridică. Nu aprinde lumina. Merge la fereastra ei mică și se uită jos.
At ten to three, she hears the back door. She gets up. She doesn’t turn on the light. She goes to her small window and looks down.
Walter este pe treaptă. Pune punga jos. Stă acolo și se uită la cărare, la fel ca în fiecare noapte. Apoi intră. Ușa se închide.
Walter is on the step. He puts the bag down. He stands there and looks at the path, the same as every night. Then he goes in. The door closes.
Ana așteaptă. Jos, radioul merge. Este frig la fereastră. Ea își pune puloverul. Trei și zece. Trei și un sfert.
Ana waits. Downstairs, the radio is on. It is cold at the window. She puts on her jumper. Ten past three. A quarter past three.
