Dutch to English

Translate a Dutch book into English, and keep the Dutch

Upload a Dutch or Flemish novel, a classic or a book that never came out in English, and read it with English beside every paragraph: close enough to English that you can often read along, with the translation there when you can't.

Ik ben makelaar in koffi, en woon op de Lauriergracht, N° 37.

I am a coffee broker, and I live on the Lauriergracht, No. 37.

Het is myn gewoonte niet, romans te schryven, of zulke dingen, en het heeft dan ook lang geduurd, voor ik er toe overging een paar riem papier extra te bestellen, en het werk aantevangen, dat gy, lieve lezer, zoo-even in de hand hebt genomen, en dat ge lezen moet als ge makelaar in koffi zyt, of als ge wat anders zyt.

It is not my habit to write novels, or such things, and so it was a long time before I brought myself to order a few extra reams of paper and begin the work that you, dear reader, have just taken in hand, and that you must read if you are a coffee broker, or if you are anything else.

Max Havelaar, Multatuli (1860), with our own English rendering.

How it works

Upload the book, choose English, and look at the free preview of the opening pages, side by side. If it reads well, translate the whole book and read it in the browser, or download it as a PDF, an EPUB, or a Kindle file. More about translating a book.

Where to find Dutch books

DBNL, the digital library of Dutch literature, has thousands of classics for free, and Project Gutenberg has more as EPUB. Your own DRM-free EPUB, a text-based PDF or a Word file all work.

Reading Dutch with English beside it

Verbs that come apart

Dutch splits its verbs and sends half to the end: aanvangen becomes "aan te vangen", overgaan becomes "ging er toe over". With the English beside it you can read a long sentence through and see where the verb finally lands.

Old spelling, same language

Nineteenth-century books spell differently: myn for mijn, gy for gij, koffi for koffie. The English beside them keeps you reading instead of puzzling over words that look misspelt.

Questions

Can I translate a Dutch book into English and keep the Dutch?

Yes, that is what it does: each Dutch paragraph stays, with its English beside it, in the browser, as a PDF, or as an EPUB or Kindle file.

Can I learn Dutch with it?

Yes: read the Dutch first and look across only when you need to, or hide the English until you tap it. The free library also has Dutch stories by level.
