Fabulele lui Esop pentru copii Punerea zurgălăului la gâtul pisicii Șoarecii au convocat odată o adunare pentru a decide un plan prin care să scape de dușmanul lor, Pisica. Cel puțin, doreau să găsească o cale de a ști când vine ea, pentru a avea timp să fugă.

The Æsop for Children Belling the Cat The Mice once called a meeting to decide on a plan to free themselves of their enemy, the Cat. At least they wished to find some way of knowing when she was coming, so they might have time to run away.

Într-adevăr, trebuia făcut ceva, căci trăiau într-o teamă atât de constantă de ghearele ei, încât abia dacă îndrăzneau să iasă din vizuinile lor noaptea sau ziua.

Indeed, something had to be done, for they lived in such constant fear of her claws that they hardly dared stir from their dens by night or day.

Multe planuri au fost discutate, dar niciunul nu a fost considerat destul de bun. În cele din urmă, un șoarece foarte tânăr s-a ridicat și a spus:

Many plans were discussed, but none of them was thought good enough. At last a very young Mouse got up and said:

„Am un plan care pare foarte simplu, dar știu că va fi un succes.

“I have a plan that seems very simple, but I know it will be successful.

Tot ce trebuie să facem este să atârnăm un zurgălău la gâtul Pisicii. Când vom auzi zurgălăul sunând, vom ști imediat că dușmanul nostru se apropie.”

All we have to do is to hang a bell about the Cat’s neck. When we hear the bell ringing we will know immediately that our enemy is coming.”

Toți șoarecii au fost foarte surprinși că nu s-au gândit la un asemenea plan mai devreme. Dar, în mijlocul bucuriei pentru norocul lor, un șoarece bătrân s-a ridicat și a spus:

All the Mice were much surprised that they had not thought of such a plan before. But in the midst of the rejoicing over their good fortune, an old Mouse arose and said:

„Recunosc că planul tânărului șoarece este foarte bun. Dar dați-mi voie să pun o întrebare: Cine va pune zurgălăul la gâtul Pisicii?”

“I will say that the plan of the young Mouse is very good. But let me ask one question: Who will bell the Cat?”

Una este să spui că ceva trebuie făcut și cu totul altceva este să faci acel lucru.

It is one thing to say that something should be done, but quite a different matter to do it.
