Następnego ranka budzę się późno. Słońce stoi już wysoko i czuję zapach kawy.
The next morning, I wake up late. The sun is already high, and I can smell coffee.
Schodzę do sali śniadaniowej. To duży pokój z widokiem na jezioro. Trzej goście siedzą przy małym stoliku i jedzą jajka.
I go down to the breakfast room. It is a big room with a view of the lake. The three guests sit at a small table and eat their eggs.
A na środku pokoju stoi Sophie, z filiżanką kawy i stosem papierów.
And Sophie stands in the middle of the room, with a cup of coffee and a pile of papers.
Sophie: Dzień dobry, kochanie! Nie mogłam spać, więc zaczęłam o szóstej. Zobacz: zadzwoniłam do Marca Ferriego.
Sophie: Good morning, darling! I couldn’t sleep, so I started work at six. Look: I called Marco Ferri.
„Zadzwoniłaś do Marca?” – mówię. – „Sophie, spotykam się z nim w piątek”.
“You called Marco?” I say. “Sophie, I’m going to meet him on Friday.”
Sophie: Właśnie. A w piątek podpisujesz umowę. Wszystko jest gotowe. Cena jest bardzo dobra, Tom. Więcej niż dobra.
Sophie: Exactly. And on Friday you sign. It’s all ready. The price is very good, Tom. Better than good.
Sophie jest prawniczką. Kiedy ma plan, nikt nie może jej powstrzymać. Wiem o tym. Czasami to uwielbiam.
Sophie is a lawyer. When she has a plan, nobody can stop her. I know that. I love that, sometimes.
Sophie: A to tutaj, kochanie, to lista wszystkiego w domu. Łóżka, stoły, lampy. Sprzedajemy wszystko. Eleno, czy mogłaby pani policzyć ręczniki?
Sophie: And this, darling, is the list of everything in the house. Beds, tables, lamps. We sell it all. Elena, could you please count the towels?
Elena: Oczywiście, pani Clarke.
Elena: Of course, Miss Clarke.
Głos Eleny jest uprzejmy i zimny. Ani razu na mnie nie patrzy. Wczoraj na tarasie jej oczy były ciepłe. Teraz są zimne i odległe.
Elena’s voice is polite and cold. She doesn’t look at me once. Yesterday on the terrace, her eyes were warm. Now they are cold and far away.
Sophie wciska mi listę do ręki i całuje mnie w policzek. „Nie patrz tak smutno, kochanie. Za tydzień będziemy znowu w Londynie”.
Sophie puts the list into my hand and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t look so sad, darling. In a week, we’re back in London.”
Kątem oka widzę, jak Elena wychodzi z pokoju. Drzwi zamykają się bardzo cicho. To jest gorsze niż głośny trzask.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Elena leave the room. The door closes very quietly. That is worse than a loud noise.
