No para Jonas

«Si haces eso, no hace falta que vuelvas a casa». Eso dijo mi padre, un martes de marzo, y luego cerró la puerta de la cocina tan fuerte que los vasos del armario tintinearon.

“If you do this, you needn’t bother coming home.” That’s what my father said, on a Tuesday in March, and then he shut the kitchen door so hard that the glasses rattled in the cupboard.

Mi padre se llama Rolf Brandt. Tiene sesenta años, lleva treinta años conduciendo autobuses en Kassel y no habla mucho. Desde que mi madre murió hace dos años, habla aún menos. Vivimos juntos en el pequeño piso en el que crecí, y casi siempre nos sentamos por la noche frente al televisor en silencio.

My father’s name is Rolf Brandt. He is sixty years old, he has driven a bus in Kassel for thirty years, and he doesn’t say much. Since my mother died two years ago, he says even less. We live together in the small flat where I grew up, and most evenings we sit in front of the TV in silence.

Ese martes le enseñé la carta. Me había inscrito en secreto en «La sartén de oro», un programa de cocina en televisión, y me aceptaron. Doce cocineros aficionados, seis semanas en Colonia, al final cincuenta mil euros y una plaza en una escuela de cocina en Lyon.

That Tuesday I showed him the letter. I had secretly applied to “The Golden Pan”, a cooking show on TV, and they had accepted me. Twelve amateur cooks, six weeks in Cologne, and at the end fifty thousand euros and a place at a cooking school in Lyon.

«Tienes un buen puesto en la aseguradora», dijo mi padre. «¿Y quieres pelar patatas en la televisión?»

“You’ve got a good job at the insurance company,” my father said. “And you want to peel potatoes on TV?”

«Quiero cocinar, papá. Como mamá».

“I want to cook, Dad. Like Mum.”

Entonces su cara se puso completamente gris, y no entendí por qué. Mi madre cocinaba para nosotros todos los días, y a todos les encantaba su comida: a los vecinos, a mis amigos, incluso al párroco. Solo mi padre comía siempre en silencio, sin decir una palabra, como si la comida fuera solo gasolina para el cuerpo.

At that, his face went completely grey, and I didn’t understand why. My mother cooked for us every day, and everyone loved her food: the neighbours, my friends, even the priest. Only my father always ate in silence, without a word, as if food were just fuel for the body.

Después de que cerrara la puerta, fui a mi habitación y saqué la caja de debajo de mi cama. Dentro está el libro de recetas de mi madre: un cuaderno azul grueso con manchas de grasa, lleno de recetas con su letra redonda. Lo saqué de la cocina después del funeral para que mi padre no lo tirara.

After he shut the door, I went to my room and pulled the box out from under my bed. Inside it lies my mother’s recipe book: a thick blue notebook with grease stains, full of recipes in her round handwriting. I took it from the kitchen after the funeral so that my father wouldn’t throw it away.

Lo abrí, como tantas veces. Pero esa noche noté algo que nunca antes me había llamado la atención. Las últimas diez páginas están pegadas, con mucho cuidado, por los bordes. Y en la primera de ellas pone, con tinta roja: No para Jonas. Todavía no.

I opened it, as I so often did. But that evening I noticed something I had never seen before. The last ten pages were glued together, very carefully, along the edges. And on the first of them, in red ink, it said: Not for Jonas. Not yet.
