For ten years I didn’t go home. And when I finally got off the train, my own uncle looked at me and immediately stared down at his shoes.

दस साल से मैं घर नहीं गई थी। और जब मैं आख़िरकार ट्रेन से उतरी, तो मेरे अपने चाचा ने मुझे देखा और तुरंत अपने जूतों की तरफ़ देखने लगे।

“Lena,” said Uncle Sepp. Just that. Then he took my suitcase and walked to the car.

“लेना,” चाचा सेप ने कहा। बस इतना ही। फिर उन्होंने मेरा सूटकेस लिया और गाड़ी की तरफ़ चल दिए।

The station in Sankt Anna is small, just one track and one bench. Behind the village stand the mountains, grey and white, exactly as before. I had thought that everything changes in ten years. But almost nothing had changed here. Except me.

जांक्ट आन्ना का रेलवे स्टेशन छोटा है, बस एक पटरी और एक बेंच। गाँव के पीछे पहाड़ खड़े हैं, सलेटी और सफ़ेद, बिल्कुल पहले की तरह। मैंने सोचा था कि दस साल में सब कुछ बदल जाता है। लेकिन यहाँ लगभग कुछ नहीं बदला था। सिर्फ़ मैं बदली थी।

My sister Katrin is getting married on Saturday. Three months ago she sent me a card with a photo of her and a man with a beard. On the back she wrote: Please come. Nobody will say anything. I promise.

मेरी बहन कात्रीन की शादी शनिवार को है। उसने मुझे तीन महीने पहले एक कार्ड भेजा था, जिसमें उसकी और दाढ़ी वाले एक आदमी की तस्वीर थी। पीछे उसने लिखा था: कृपया ज़रूर आना। कोई कुछ नहीं कहेगा। पक्का वादा।

Nobody will say anything. I had read that sentence a hundred times, in the office in Hamburg, on the underground, in bed at night. It had sounded like comfort. Now, in the car next to Uncle Sepp, it sounded like a threat.

We drove through the village. Uncle Sepp turned the radio up at exactly the moment we drove past the church. I knew why.

हम गाँव से होकर निकले। चाचा सेप ने रेडियो की आवाज़ तेज़ कर दी, ठीक उसी पल जब हम चर्च के पास से गुज़रे। मुझे पता था कि क्यों।

Ten years ago I was supposed to get married in that church. The guests came, the music played, Tobias waited at the altar. And I got into a taxi and went to the station, in my white dress.

दस साल पहले इसी चर्च में मेरी शादी होनी थी। मेहमान आ चुके थे, संगीत बज रहा था, टोबियास वेदी के सामने इंतज़ार कर रहा था। और मैं सफ़ेद जोड़े में ही एक टैक्सी में बैठकर स्टेशन चली गई थी।

Since then, nobody in my family has talked to me about that day. Not on the phone, not in letters. Not even when my father died.

तब से मेरे परिवार में किसी ने भी मुझसे उस दिन के बारे में बात नहीं की थी। न फ़ोन पर, न चिट्ठियों में। तब भी नहीं, जब मेरे पिता जी गुज़रे।

In front of my mother’s house Uncle Sepp switched off the engine. He looked at the steering wheel for a long time.

मेरी माँ के घर के सामने चाचा सेप ने गाड़ी बंद कर दी। वे काफ़ी देर तक स्टेयरिंग व्हील को देखते रहे।

“There’s one thing you need to know,” he said then. “Tobias is playing in the village band on Saturday. Trumpet. Katrin couldn’t uninvite him.”

“एक बात तुम्हें पता होनी चाहिए,” उन्होंने फिर कहा। “टोबियास शनिवार को म्यूज़िक बैंड में बजा रहा है। तुरही। कात्रीन उसे आने से मना नहीं कर सकी।”

Then he got out, and I sat alone in the car, my heart pounding.
