Red Hair and a Long Nose

「ルドルフ、あなたはいつになったら何かするの？」と兄の妻が言いました。

“Rudolf, when are you ever going to do anything?” said my brother’s wife.

「ローズ、ぼくはね」と答えて、ぼくは卵のスプーンを置きました。「どうして何かしなければならないんだい？ ぼくは楽に暮らしているし、お金もだいたい足りている。お金が十分ある人なんていないよ。ぼくはバーレスドン卿の弟だ。それで十分さ！」

“My dear Rose,” I answered, and I put down my egg spoon. “Why should I do anything? I have a comfortable life and nearly enough money, and nobody ever has quite enough. I’m the brother of Lord Burlesdon. It’s enough!”

「あなたは二十九歳よ」と彼女は言いました。「それなのに、何もしないで、ただ…」

“You are twenty-nine,” she said, “and you’ve done nothing but…”

「旅をして楽しんでいるだけ？ そのとおりだね。うちの家族は、何かをする必要がないんだ。」

“Travel around and enjoy myself? That’s true. Our family doesn’t need to do things.”

これを聞いて、ローズは少し怒りました。ローズの家は、ラッセンディル家ほど立派ではなかったからです。でも、ローズはかわいくて、とてもお金持ちでした。だから、兄のロバートは気にしませんでした。

This made Rose a little angry, because her family was less grand than the Rassendylls. But she was pretty and very rich, so my brother Robert did not mind.

「いい家族というものは、たいてい、ほかの家族より悪いのよ」と彼女は言いました。

“Good families are usually worse than other families,” she said.

ぼくは自分の髪にさわりました。彼女の言いたいことが、よくわかっていたからです。

I touched my hair, because I knew exactly what she meant.

「ロバートの髪が黒くて、本当によかった！」と彼女は大きな声で言いました。

“I’m so glad Robert’s hair is black!” she cried.

そのとき、ロバートが入ってきました。ロバートは七時に起きて、朝ごはんの前に仕事をします。妻の赤い顔を見て、やさしくさわりました。

At that moment Robert came in. He gets up at seven and works before breakfast. He saw his wife’s red face and touched it kindly.

「どうしたんだい、ローズ？」と兄は聞きました。

“What’s the matter, my dear?” he asked.

「ぼくが何もしないで、髪が赤いから、怒っているんだ」と、ぼくは悲しそうに言いました。

“She’s angry because I do nothing and I have red hair,” I said sadly.

「ええ、もちろん、髪はこの人のせいじゃないわ」とローズは言いました。

“Oh, of course his hair isn’t his fault,” said Rose.

「うちの家族では、三十年ぐらいに一人、その髪の人が生まれるんだ」と兄は言いました。「鼻もそうだ。ルドルフは両方もっている。」

“One of the family gets that hair every thirty years or so,” said my brother. “The nose too. Rudolf has both.”
