Tóc đỏ và mũi dài
Red Hair and a Long Nose
“Rudolf, bao giờ em mới chịu làm một việc gì đây?” vợ của anh tôi nói.
“Rudolf, when are you ever going to do anything?” said my brother’s wife.
“Chị Rose thân mến,” tôi trả lời, và đặt thìa ăn trứng xuống. “Sao em phải làm gì chứ? Em có cuộc sống thoải mái và gần đủ tiền, mà chẳng ai có đủ tiền hẳn cả. Em là em trai của Lord Burlesdon. Thế là đủ rồi!”
“My dear Rose,” I answered, and I put down my egg spoon. “Why should I do anything? I have a comfortable life and nearly enough money, and nobody ever has quite enough. I’m the brother of Lord Burlesdon. It’s enough!”
“Em hai mươi chín tuổi rồi,” chị nói, “mà em chẳng làm gì ngoài…”
“You are twenty-nine,” she said, “and you’ve done nothing but…”
“Đi chơi khắp nơi và vui vẻ à? Đúng thế. Gia đình mình đâu cần làm việc.”
“Travel around and enjoy myself? That’s true. Our family doesn’t need to do things.”
Câu này làm Rose hơi giận, vì gia đình chị không sang trọng bằng nhà Rassendyll. Nhưng chị xinh và rất giàu, nên anh Robert của tôi không để ý.
This made Rose a little angry, because her family was less grand than the Rassendylls. But she was pretty and very rich, so my brother Robert did not mind.
“Những gia đình tốt thường tệ hơn các gia đình khác,” chị nói.
“Good families are usually worse than other families,” she said.
Tôi sờ lên tóc mình, vì tôi biết chính xác chị muốn nói gì.
I touched my hair, because I knew exactly what she meant.
“Chị vui quá vì tóc anh Robert màu đen!” chị kêu lên.
“I’m so glad Robert’s hair is black!” she cried.
Lúc đó Robert đi vào. Anh dậy lúc bảy giờ và làm việc trước bữa sáng. Anh thấy mặt vợ đỏ lên và dịu dàng chạm vào má chị.
At that moment Robert came in. He gets up at seven and works before breakfast. He saw his wife’s red face and touched it kindly.
“Có chuyện gì vậy, em yêu?” anh hỏi.
“What’s the matter, my dear?” he asked.
“Chị ấy giận vì em chẳng làm gì và có mái tóc đỏ,” tôi buồn bã nói.
“She’s angry because I do nothing and I have red hair,” I said sadly.
“Ồ, tất nhiên tóc cậu ấy không phải lỗi của cậu ấy,” Rose nói.
“Oh, of course his hair isn’t his fault,” said Rose.
“Khoảng ba mươi năm lại có một người trong họ có mái tóc ấy,” anh tôi nói. “Cả cái mũi nữa. Rudolf có cả hai.”
“One of the family gets that hair every thirty years or so,” said my brother. “The nose too. Rudolf has both.”
