Rude włosy i długi nos
Red Hair and a Long Nose
„Rudolfie, kiedy wreszcie coś zrobisz?” – zapytała żona mojego brata.
“Rudolf, when are you ever going to do anything?” said my brother’s wife.
„Moja droga Rose” – odpowiedziałem i odłożyłem łyżeczkę do jajka. Jestem bratem lorda Burlesdona. To wystarczy!”
“My dear Rose,” I answered, and I put down my egg spoon. “Why should I do anything? I have a comfortable life and nearly enough money, and nobody ever has quite enough. I’m the brother of Lord Burlesdon. It’s enough!”
“You are twenty-nine,” she said, “and you’ve done nothing but…”
„Podróżowałem i dobrze się bawiłem? To prawda. Nasza rodzina nie musi nic robić.”
“Travel around and enjoy myself? That’s true. Our family doesn’t need to do things.”
This made Rose a little angry, because her family was less grand than the Rassendylls. But she was pretty and very rich, so my brother Robert did not mind.
“Good families are usually worse than other families,” she said.
I touched my hair, because I knew exactly what she meant.
“I’m so glad Robert’s hair is black!” she cried.
W tej chwili wszedł Robert. Wstaje o siódmej i pracuje przed śniadaniem. Zobaczył czerwoną twarz żony i dotknął jej łagodnie.
At that moment Robert came in. He gets up at seven and works before breakfast. He saw his wife’s red face and touched it kindly.
„Co się stało, moja droga?” – zapytał.
“What’s the matter, my dear?” he asked.
“She’s angry because I do nothing and I have red hair,” I said sadly.
“Oh, of course his hair isn’t his fault,” said Rose.
„Co trzydzieści lat ktoś w rodzinie dostaje takie włosy” – powiedział mój brat. „I taki nos też. Rudolf ma jedno i drugie.”
“One of the family gets that hair every thirty years or so,” said my brother. “The nose too. Rudolf has both.”
