Yasmin avait vingt-sept ans. Elle était ingénieure à la compagnie des eaux au Caire.

Yasmin was twenty-seven. She was an engineer at the water company in Cairo.

Son bureau était au cinquième étage d’un grand bâtiment gris près du Nil.

Her office was on the fifth floor of a big grey building near the Nile.

Lundi, elle est arrivée à sept heures et demie, avant tout le monde. Elle a fait un café et elle a allumé son ordinateur.

On Monday, she arrived at half past seven, before everyone. She made a coffee and turned on her computer.

Il y avait un message de sa sœur. « Bonjour ! Cinq jours avant la fête ! Tu es prête ? »

There was a message from her sister. “Good morning! Five days to the party! Are you ready?”

Yasmin a souri. Sa sœur Nour avait vingt-quatre ans. Samedi, il y avait une grande fête dans l’appartement de leurs parents. C’était la fête de fiançailles de Nour. La famille de son fiancé prévoyait de venir et de rencontrer sa famille.

Yasmin smiled. Her sister Nour was twenty-four. On Saturday, there was a big party at their parents’ flat. It was Nour’s engagement party. Her boyfriend’s family planned to come and meet her family.

Il y a deux mois, Yasmin a fait une promesse. « Je vais tout organiser, a-t-elle dit. La nourriture, les fleurs, les chaises, le gâteau. Tu ne dois rien faire. »

Two months ago, Yasmin made a promise. “I’ll plan everything,” she said. “The food, the flowers, the chairs, the cake. You don’t have to do anything.”

Maintenant, elle avait une liste avec trente choses dessus.

Now she had a list with thirty things on it.

Elle a répondu. « Bien sûr que je suis prête. Ne t’inquiète pas. Ça va être une journée parfaite. »

She wrote back. “Of course I’m ready. Don’t worry. It’s going to be a perfect day.”

Puis, elle a regardé le calendrier sur le mur. C’était une semaine chargée pour son équipe.

Then she looked at the schedule on the wall. It was a busy week for her team.

Lundi, neuf heures : réunion d’équipe. Mardi : une visite à la station d’eau à Gizeh. Mercredi : l’équipe de nuit, de huit heures du soir à huit heures du matin. Jeudi, dix heures : la grande présentation pour le ministère.

Monday, nine o’clock: team meeting. Tuesday: a visit to the water station in Giza. Wednesday: the night shift, from eight in the evening to eight in the morning. Thursday, ten o’clock: the big presentation for the ministry.

La présentation était la chose la plus importante. Yasmin a travaillé dessus pendant un an. C’était un plan pour de nouveaux tuyaux d’eau dans la vieille ville.

The presentation was the most important thing. Yasmin worked on it for a year. It was a plan for new water pipes in the old city.

« Là-bas, certaines rues ont seulement de l’eau pendant deux heures par jour, disait-elle souvent. Nous pouvons changer ça. »

“Some streets there only get water for two hours a day,” she often said. “We can change that.”

À neuf heures, l’équipe s’est réunie dans la salle de réunion. Son chef était assis au bout de la table. C’était un homme grand avec une voix forte.

At nine, the team met in the meeting room. Her boss sat at the end of the table. He was a tall man with a loud voice.
