Pazartesi
Monday
Yasmin yirmi yedi yaşındaydı. Kahire’deki su şirketinde bir mühendisti.
Yasmin was twenty-seven. She was an engineer at the water company in Cairo.
Ofisi, Nil’in yakınındaki büyük gri bir binanın beşinci katındaydı.
Her office was on the fifth floor of a big grey building near the Nile.
Pazartesi günü saat yedi buçukta, herkesten önce geldi. Bir kahve yaptı ve bilgisayarını açtı.
On Monday, she arrived at half past seven, before everyone. She made a coffee and turned on her computer.
Kız kardeşinden bir mesaj vardı: “Günaydın! Partiye beş gün kaldı! Hazır mısın?”
There was a message from her sister. “Good morning! Five days to the party! Are you ready?”
Yasmin gülümsedi. Kız kardeşi Nour yirmi dört yaşındaydı. Cumartesi günü anne babasının dairesinde büyük bir parti vardı. Bu, Nour’un nişan partisiydi. Erkek arkadaşının ailesi, Nour’un ailesiyle tanışmak için gelmeyi planladı.
Yasmin smiled. Her sister Nour was twenty-four. On Saturday, there was a big party at their parents’ flat. It was Nour’s engagement party. Her boyfriend’s family planned to come and meet her family.
İki ay önce Yasmin bir söz verdi. “Her şeyi ben planlayacağım,” dedi. “Yemekleri, çiçekleri, sandalyeleri, pastayı. Hiçbir şey yapmak zorunda değilsin.”
Two months ago, Yasmin made a promise. “I’ll plan everything,” she said. “The food, the flowers, the chairs, the cake. You don’t have to do anything.”
Şimdi üzerinde otuz şey olan bir listesi vardı.
Now she had a list with thirty things on it.
Cevap yazdı: “Tabii ki hazırım. Merak etme. Mükemmel bir gün olacak.”
She wrote back. “Of course I’m ready. Don’t worry. It’s going to be a perfect day.”
Sonra duvardaki programa baktı. Ekibi için yoğun bir haftaydı.
Then she looked at the schedule on the wall. It was a busy week for her team.
Pazartesi, saat dokuz: ekip toplantısı. Salı: Giza’daki su istasyonuna ziyaret. Çarşamba: gece vardiyası, akşam sekizden sabah sekize kadar. Perşembe, saat on: bakanlık için büyük sunum.
Monday, nine o’clock: team meeting. Tuesday: a visit to the water station in Giza. Wednesday: the night shift, from eight in the evening to eight in the morning. Thursday, ten o’clock: the big presentation for the ministry.
Sunum en önemli şeydi. Yasmin onun üzerinde bir yıl çalıştı. Eski şehirdeki yeni su boruları için bir plandı.
The presentation was the most important thing. Yasmin worked on it for a year. It was a plan for new water pipes in the old city.
Sık sık “Oradaki bazı sokaklar günde sadece iki saat su alıyor,” diyordu. “Bunu değiştirebiliriz.”
“Some streets there only get water for two hours a day,” she often said. “We can change that.”
Saat dokuzda ekip toplantı odasında toplandı. Patronu masanın başında oturdu. Yüksek sesli, uzun boylu bir adamdı.
At nine, the team met in the meeting room. Her boss sat at the end of the table. He was a tall man with a loud voice.
