Czwarty wymiar
The Fourth Dimension
Będę nazywać go Podróżnikiem w Czasie. To dla niego najłatwiejsza nazwa. Był naukowcem i mieszkał w dużym domu w Richmond niedaleko Londynu. W każdy czwartek kilku z nas jadło u niego kolację.
I am going to call him the Time Traveller. That is the easiest name for him. He was a scientist, and he lived in a big house in Richmond, near London. Every Thursday a few of us had dinner at his house.
That Thursday we were sitting by the fire after dinner. The Time Traveller made his chairs himself, and they were very comfortable. It was the lazy hour after a good meal, when ideas come easily.
Siedzieliśmy wygodnie i słuchaliśmy.
The Time Traveller was explaining something difficult to us. His grey eyes were shining, and his pale face was red with excitement. We sat back and listened. At that time we thought his new idea was only a clever game with words.
“Listen to me carefully,” he said. “I want to show you that one or two old ideas are wrong. For example, the maths they taught you at school is wrong.”
„To poważna sprawa na początek” – powiedział Filby. Filby miał rude włosy i lubił się spierać.
“That is a big thing to start with,” said Filby. Filby had red hair, and he liked to argue.
„Nie proszę was, żebyście wierzyli w cokolwiek bez dobrego powodu” – odpowiedział Podróżnik w Czasie.
“I am not asking you to believe anything without a good reason,” the Time Traveller answered. “Think about a line. A true line has no thickness at all, so it cannot really exist. You learned that at school, didn’t you?”
Jednym z gości był psycholog. „Tak, to prawda” – powiedział Psycholog.
One of the guests was a psychologist. “Yes, that is right,” said the Psychologist.
“Now think about a box,” the Time Traveller went on. “It has length, width and height. But can a box with only those three things really exist?”
„Oczywiście, że może” – powiedział Filby. „Wszystkie prawdziwe rzeczy…”
“Of course it can,” said Filby. “All real things …”
“Wait a moment,” said the Time Traveller. “Can a box exist for no time at all? Can it be there for not even one second?”
„Nie rozumiem cię” – powiedział Filby.
“I don’t understand you,” said Filby.
Filby zaczął myśleć, a Podróżnik w Czasie kontynuował swoje wyjaśnienia.
Filby started to think, and the Time Traveller went on with his explanation.
„Każda prawdziwa rzecz ma długość, szerokość i wysokość” – powiedział. „Ale ona także trwa. Jest przez pewien czas. Każda z tych czterech rzeczy to wymiar.
“Every real thing has length, width and height,” he said. “But it also lasts. It is there for some time. Each of these four things is a dimension. So time is the fourth dimension. It is not really different from the other three. But our mind moves along it, from the day we are born to the day we die. That is why we think it is different.”
