The photo on the wall

シポはつまといっしょにケープタウンに住んでいました。49さいで、大きな学校の先生でした。

Sipho lived in Cape Town with his wife. He was forty-nine, and he was a teacher at a big school.

毎朝、テーブルマウンテンの下を車で仕事に行きました。毎日山を見上げました。一度も登りませんでした。

Every morning, he drove to work under Table Mountain. He looked up at it every day. He never went up.

ある日曜日の夜、つまがとなりのソファに座りました。

One Sunday evening, his wife sat down next to him on the sofa.

「あなたのたんじょう日、あと3週間ね」とつまは言いました。「50さいになるのね。何がいい？ 大きなパーティー？」

“Your birthday is in three weeks,” she said. “You’re going to be fifty. What would you like? A big party?”

「パーティーはいらないよ」とシポは言いました。「テーブルマウンテンに歩いて登りたいんだ」

“No party,” said Sipho. “I’d like to walk up Table Mountain.”

つまは笑いました。「あなたが？ 道の先の店にも車で行くのに」

His wife laughed. “You? You take the car to the shop at the end of the street.”

「わかっているよ。でも登りたいんだ。昔の友だちとね」

“I know. But I want to do it. With the old group.”

シポはかべの写真を見ました。4人のやせた男の子が、大きな岩の上に立っていました。後ろには、海と町ぜんぶがありました。

He looked at a photo on the wall. Four thin boys stood on a big rock. Behind them, there was the sea and the whole city.

1994年のテーブルマウンテンの上でした。男の子たちは18さいでした。その週にさいごのテストが終わりました。次の日、みんなで山に登りました。

It was the top of Table Mountain, in 1994. The boys were eighteen. They finished their last exam that week. The next day, they walked up the mountain.

「32年か」とシポは言いました。「同じ写真がほしいんだ。50さいの、同じ4人で」

“Thirty-two years,” said Sipho. “I want the same photo. The same four people, at fifty.”

「さいごに会ったのはいつ？」

“When did you last see them?”

シポは考えました。「5年前だな。6年前かもしれない」

Sipho thought about it. “Five years ago. Maybe six.”

「じゃあ、みんなに書いて」とつまは言いました。「今夜ね」

“Then write to them,” said his wife. “Tonight.”
